It could be anything, whether it was falling for old rumers, common mistakes in Pokémon, something outrageous, or anything in between! It doesnt even have to be when you're young. It could be something that happened recently as well. For example:

-I didnt use attacking moves on Pichus because I thought they would hurt themselves like in Smash Bros. Melee.
-I thought Wailord evolved into Kyogre for some reason
-I thought Steel was weak to Water because of rusting. It didnt help that I tested this theory on Steelix, who I thought was a pure Steel-type until a few years ago.
-Probably my stupidest one ever, but I thought Magikarp evolved into either Gyarados or Milotic, and that the evolution was based on how friendly they are towards you, with Gyarados if they hated you, and Milotic if they liked you. So every time the Magikarp evolved into Gyarados, I felt bad that I kept training them wrong and would release them.

When I first started playing, I had no idea you had to raise your Pokémon evenly, and so by the time I got to Lt. Surge, I had a lv 40-something Blastoise and a weak assortment of other Pokémon. Pulling an Ash with a Pikachu saved my skin.

I did the same thing as Wave Pearl, only i beat the Elite Four with a level 100 Venasaur, and a team of 5 level 33-36 Pokémon. It wasn't until Pokémon Black I realized how much easier it was when you kept it balanced. Hmm... What else... My first battle I thought i was winning by using growl, as i didn't understand which HP bar was which. That's when i learned about pity money. What's another... I thought that because my Weedle survived the fight with Zapdos in Red Rescue Team that that meant it was super powerful. This thing never died, and went everywhere with me though, but it also was never really targeted, because of how low the aggro it drew was.. But it also got me killed when it would pick a fight with Keckleon's.

    THIS. GODDAMN. GUIDEBOOK.

The one thing I remember next to each gym leader that didn't resist fire types was that it said this. "If you don't have any strong Pokémon of type X, then bring a strong fire type." Thus I overlevelled a Charizard and brought it against Koga and Sabrina wondering why I wasn't that powerful. IT EVEN SAID IT AGAINST LORELI, AND I FREAKING BELIEVED IT.
Also, in the E4, I used to save before each battle and reset if I lost, even though my Pokémon would've had a much greater chance when I lost because they were more powerful. And I used to unevenly train, so I'd have a kinda strong Zard and Zapdos and the rest of my team would get OHKOed.

I had this same one! It was so full of mistakes it's honestly embarrassing.

    Let me see...

    - Rode on the success of a Charizard and a Blaziken to get through LeafGreen and Ruby

    - Went all the way to Vermillion City to get Cut on my Charizard before backtracking to Cerulean to defeat Misty

    - Teaching Hyper Beam and Blast Burn to the same Charizard to blast my way through the Elite 4 with raw power

    - Was tricked into saving after defeating Legendary Pokémon like Moltres

    - Had no idea how to awaken the Regis, and I was convinced to have someone use Explosion in the middle of the room (it did not work. It did. Not. Work)

I got waaaay better in Gen IV. :D

I never trusted those guidebooks due to what I heard before. Good to know I did SOMETHING right XD

-Until last year, I thought Darkrai was a Ghost-type.

I also played through Diamond with just my Torterra.
I also only gave my Pokémon attacking moves, since I was convinced that those other moves were useless, since they dealt no damage.
..well, I still do that. I hate status moves. They only delay a certain victory on my side.
..that's probably why I suck as a competitive battler XD

Oh, i forgot some, though not all are believed by me as dumb. I still save during the E4, i dont want to restart, even if they don't get stronger. I still am a hyper offense person in the games, and am mostly a hyper offensive in competitive. I relied on Mega Kick and Fire Blast on my Charizard, and Mega Punch on Blastoise.

-Thought water was weak to ice
-Kangaskhan HM slave (Cut, Surf, Headbutt and Strength)
-Used my friend's action replay to give myself a level 98 Magneton with Fly and False Swipe
-Caught two boxes of Meowth with Pickup, forgetting I can only use 6 at a time to get items
-Tried to interact with every object I saw (This was before I knew about the dowsing machine)
-Bought 40 heal balls, thinking they were useful

I always have damage moves on my in-game Pokémon too. I much prefer dealing damage to inflicting a status move in most cases.

Something else dumb I did: I never taught my Staraptor Brave Bird and instead relied in the likes of Pluck, Wing Attack, and Aerial Ace because I never liked the fact that it gave you recoil damage.

Like many of you above, there was a time in my trainer career where I would use only damage-dealing moves. I still kind of do that though, often preferring versatile type coverage within individual pokes as my main strategy.

Back in Blue version, I used a Rare Candy on a level 20-something Pidgeotto. I was racing someone to Pidgeot so I decided mid-level ten levels before evolution was the perfect time to use that little booster rocket, as opposed to having just crossed the 35 line, or at all.

I also made the potentially stupid thing of using the MissingNo. glitch a couple dozen times on the same Blue version. You know, the glitch that gives you infinite of your sixth item slot item and can potentially brick your game? Yeah I did that. Luckily I wasn't entirely dumb with it and only started tossing Masterballs at every single Pokémon I saw after I did that glitch.

    I remember...

    - Thinking Fire beat Electric (due my Typhlosion beating a Magnemite/Magneton)
    - Giving a Breloom a set of Solarbeam/Sunny Day/Synthesis/Brick Break (I didn't know about physical/special split lol)
    - Thinking Ground beat Ghost due to it working on the Gastly line in Gen 2

And then putting the obv dumb HMs on Pokémon like Feraligatr, Gyarados, etc.

Oh my gosh this was me too haha, along with Flare Blitz and such. I honestly never liked moves even like Close Combat or Overheat that lower stats haha.

Let's see, when I was younger I never bought Repels because I didn't think they were useful. Hah.

Used a level 75 Lapras with Surf/Ice Beam/Psychic/Thunderbolt to get through the E4 in Leaf Green.

Saved after defeating legendaries in Pearl.

I also used to think that Ice was supereffective against Rock while also being weak to it, because of Pokémon with Rock/Ground combos.

Well one of the dumb things I did when I was young was to teach my Charizard Cut in my first playthrough of Red Version, I thought you could just delete it like any other move, which L earned pretty quickly that you couldn't. XD

Recently, during my Alpha Sapphire Nuzlocke, I made the idiotic mistake of thinking a Lv. 31 Impish Breloom could survive Norman's Slaking's Retaliate at full health.

I cried a little on the inside.

What's worse is that I had a Skarmory with me.

When I first played Crystal, I never bothered leveling up any of my Pokémon other than my Typhlosion. So he was like lvl 70 while my other Pokémon were pretty weak.

I also once traded traded my first Charmeleon card for one of those Burger King ones, because I had never seen them before.
And traded my holographic, japanese Skarmory for a holographic vaporeon. :x (Although I managed to find another Skarmory exactly like it at a garage sale a few years later, so now I have both). :>

Pokérus. When I first heard of it, I thought it was something bad to the point that I restarted my GBA when finding out one of my Pokémon has one, until nowadays when I heard that it's actually a good virus that can max the EVs faster.

    Here are some:

I thought when I used Stat Boosting moves it would add onto my stats for the entire game even outside of battle. I never used them though.

When watching the anime I thought there was a Pokémon like Jigglypuff called Bigglypuff. Thanks to the Pokémon of the ancients episode in season 1.

Put Frustration on my Blastoise in FR because I ran out of PP in Hydro Pump.

Went through Diamond, Platinum, HG, FR with just using one Pokémon. This didn't change until Pokémon Black came out.

I believed all those "cheats" like holding the A button will help in capturing the Pokémon.

I would only use damaging moves, and sometimes I would put another move of the same type on my Pokémon to "save PP"
