I see a lot of, well, younger than me, people on the site, and as someone who writes full-time, I'm genuinely curious as to what type of genres you enjoy, characters, twists, even what point of view you like the book to be written in. I'd like to find out what the next generation is enjoying, who's your favorite book character and why, would you rather the author used a ton of detail or moved quickly, etc. and so forth. So spill, what really gets you interested in a novel?

And the big question...Paper or eReader?

I usually go for the fantasy genre. I like the adventure that fantasy has to offer, and the fact that just about anything can be done in those stories. I like characters that are easy to relate to. That usually requires at least a little bit of a sense of humor. The characters should also all be very different from one another. There are always similarities between people, so that should be portrayed, but no one is the same. The differences need to be focused on just as much as the similarities, but neither should be ignored.

I tend to really like those antagonist twists. The stories where two characters used to be best friends, then something happened between them and they hate each other are the kinds of things I like to read. It's interesting, and those twists can be very different from another story giving the same twist.

I like books written in first or third person... Don't really have any real preference. Both can get a story told. I like first person because of how much it focuses on the protagonists emotions, but I like that third person, while spending less time with individuals emotions, get more thought and emotion out of all the characters.

I too am a sucker for fantasy--I have always enjoyed an epic adventure in a world that may never be. Cool creatures and cool magical systems are a plus

I like reading Manga. For proper books, I like reading fantasy stuff too. Time to time I read the newspaper. :)

I read books on self-help, human potential, natural law, etc. A few of the titles I read are:

Working with the Law - Raymond Holliwell
The Science of Getting Rich - Wallace D. Wattles

But I also listen to a ton of different audio recordings and programs which give me a lot of useful information as well.

I enjoy fantasy and science fiction the most, although there are some other books I can enjoy of any genres, I'll give just about anything a chance. And, I'm sticking to paper. Traditional me

Seems like a lot of fantasy fans! Must recommend a couple trilogies that I adored growing up. Both are based in Dungeons and Dragons "Worlds", one is Forgotten Realms, the other is DragonLance. The Chronicles Trilogy (Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Winter Night and Spring Dawning) by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman is fantastic, and if you love Dragons, you'll definitely enjoy that trilogy. The other is part of the Drizzt Do'Urden series by RA Salvatore, the original trilogy (Both Chronicles and this one have branched off into numerous other books, these are just the original series that started them) The Crystal Shard, Streams of Silver, and The Halfling's Gem, is also great, and has an interesting racial prejudice theme underlying it that I always found interesting to include in a fantasy series.

Definitely check them out if you haven't already!

Fantasy, science fiction, dystopian societies...basically anything that sparks my interest. I'm not that much of an avid reader, but I don't have a problem with picking up a book every so often. Manga is pretty cool, too. I usually end up having to read on my phone because my parents never want to take me out, but sometimes I'll get lucky. I think some of my favorite books are "Enders Game", the "Divergent" trilogy, the "Legend" trilogy, and the "Hunger Games" trilogy.

Like I said, a lot of dystopia.

I'm really into fantasy (like most people on this site), slice of life, action, and suspense. My favorite books in particular are the GONE series, The Future of Us, Audrey, Wait!, and Out of My Mind.

    This.

I enjoy various forms of literature. Fantasy and suspense are quite gripping and tell great stories. I tend to enjoy books written in third person although first person can give a greater understanding of the protagonist's feelings and emotions to the reader. I also prefer reading hard-cover/soft-cover as opposed to the digital media equivalent. I personally think it's much better to hold a book in your hands than just scrolling on a Kindle.

    Paper > eReader and audio.

Mystery novels are my favorite. Fantasy, historical (fiction and nonfiction) are my other favorites. Not a fan of classic novels or poetry or plays. Not a fan of self help books either.

I own over 400 books right now. I would have more but I don't have any more room haha. Also have two blogs about books.

I agree with the wolf above me :33 I love mystery, fantasy, and history books.

I like to write, its one of my hobbies, and my writing style is very... ood. Very short sentences, almost no clarification on who the main character is, or any details about them. I'm currently reading Skulduggery Pleasant, and I think its good. Very spoopy sometimes though.

I prefer paper over eReaders, because I have a bad reputation with hand held devices.

Well, to start; paper anyday. I don't like ereaders or the like at all.

[background=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.4)]Sci-fi, fantasy, suspense, horror...fiction, really :) Just...no dystopia please. I like some suspense/tension, but it has to be a balance. I don't like scenarios where the main character's life just seems to be depressing incident after depressing incident and crushing defeat either.[/background]

I prefer writing in third person, and usually I prefer reading it too, but as long as it's written well, I can stand to read first person. I typically read fantasy (and write it!) and characters are a thousand times more important than any other literary element. E-readers are alright, but I love to feel a book in my hand and be able to flip through the pages with my thumb while I'm reading.

I love science fiction, like the Hunger Games and Divergent series. They give you a plot that could happen one day! The familiar setting really does set a feeling for me, like Divergent taking place if Chicago. I prefer first person. It gives you a better idea of what the main character is seeing, thinking, and feeling.

    I prefer paper.

I love twists that you wouldn't expect. Like a character was said to be dead but ends up alive. Or the main character in a book dies. (HINT HINT)

I enjoy fiction more than non-fiction, but I still love to read about important scientific developments when they come up. Some parts of our world today are even more interesting than the parts we make up!

I tend to read longer and more complex fiction, like the Inheritance Cycle and the Codex Alera. With both of these series being over 3,000 pages total, it gives time for plots and characters to develop instead of just haveing a few events associated with each. The unique for their time ideas and masterful wrting of both of these series doesn't hurt either. They are well worth the read if you find yourself without a good fiction series.

Fantasy for me. Harry Potter. Lord of the Rings. If it doesn't have dragons or unicorns I don't want to hear about it.

Honestly though the last book I enjoyed reading was way back in elementary school. Then teenage-hood hit and suddenly all the books are about girl falls in love with guy, girl has emotional drama relating to guy because guy is a werewolf/vampire/zombie/weird creeper destined to kill you etc etc....I just like my books to be love-drama free....

The other things...paper, always. Detail is nice if it's important. Things like the colors of the flowers under the store window that so and so passes by as she stalks whats his name while he buys a coffee with 2.35g of sugar stirred counter clockwise with a wooden stick...yeah. Just no.... I like third person so we can explore the other characters. First person can work out too if your character's thoughts are really THAT interesting/important to the story. Books like Hunger Games where it's supposed to be a kind of mystery on who ends up surviving. Well first person totally kills any chance of that...Characters. Strong female characters that aren't there for love drama. Male characters with a brain. Realistic flaws. A parent or two would be cool. Some inner conflict but not extreme to the point where it's like "woe is me. I am angst. I am tragedy. I looked at my puppy and it felt so sad for me it drowned itself."

As for twists...deaths. Permanent deaths. Not "Oh. He died but we're gonna revive him. Now she dies so we're gonna revive her cuz I like her." Boring. Fav book character. Hermione (Harry Potter) probably. Badassness came first, not love.

Okay, my favourite books would be historical fiction (depeding on when and where it is set) and fantasy. I don't really enjoy Sci-Fi books (except Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, because that is funny) and I much prefer if there is a good amount of humour in the books (hence I don't like the Hunger Games or Tommorow When the War Began series).
