Heroes! The deliverers of justice and the protectors of the weak, and, uhh, what else? Or is it even those things? What is it that makes a powerful person a hero instead of a villain, or just a bystanding powerful person? Are there any prominent examples of so-called heroes who don't qualify, or who totally exemplify your criteria of heroism?
All-Might. EDIT: Okay, maybe I should go into a little bit of detail... So, for those who don't know, All-Might is one of the protagonists from My Hero Academia, a well-established hero who takes the main protagonist, Izuku Midoriya, under his wing as his successor. His ability, One For All, allows him incredible feats of strength, speed, and endurance at extreme levels, and he uses it very well. From defeating villains on a regular basis to rescuing victims of different kinds, All-Might can basically do it all, so he is considered the #1 Hero. However, his abilities don't guarantee his hero status. Many villains in a number of different universes (and some in the very same) exhibit similar talents. The difference is on a more basic level - morality. Villains are driven by a variety of intents, but in the end they view themselves above all others and desire to display it. Heroes, value people above themselves and are willing to sacrifice themselves to save others. All-Might is the very symbol of self-sacrifice, especially after his injury five years prior to the start of the series (not really spoilers since he explains it to Izuku in the second episode). Because of it, he lost a lot of his physical ability and is limited in his time doing hero work, but regardless he always answers the call (which admittedly gets him into trouble more often than not, but that's simply a consequence of his actions). Of course, even he has his weak moments - in the same episode, it took the actions of Izuku's valiant charge to remind All-Might of his ideals, as up to then he was watching helplessly from the sidelines, afraid to act because of his time limit. Perhaps he is too idealistic, but people draw hope from idealism, and he represents that hope. He is the "Symbol of Peace".
To me a hero is someone who has good morals (I have to lead with that for the next statement), but also I believe a hero is someone who never gives up. Someone who in face of great adversary they don't just give up and walk away. They persist on through the turmoil and the grief. The never give up always reaching for what they desire. That to me is what it means to be a hero.
"X wasn't even half as naive as you, that's what made him a hero." "I don't need a reason to help people!" "We fight because it is the the only way we may protect ourselves. If we must fight to protect, then we have no choice but to fight!" "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." "I am the hope of the universe. I am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace. I am the protector of the innocent. I am the light in the darkness. I am truth. ALLY TO GOOD, NIGHTMARE TO YOU!" "sometimes, the small rewards are the best." "I'm not doing this for recognition! I'm not doing this for fame, fortune, or some twisted sense of justice! I'm doing this because it is the right thing to do." "Actions speak louder than words." "It's not about doing the right thing, it's about doing the right thing when there is no one to stand beside you OR watch you." "I'm not a hero. What I am is a man just trying to get through life while helping others when I can. I know that nothing I do will have a greater impact or meaning in the end, no matter what paths or actions I take. All I know is that if I can help just one person to not suffer, I am doing better than you to help help humanity one step at a time." Just some quotes that in some way says what I think part of being a hero is. I will leave it to your individual interpretations. And yes, a few of these are mine.
Tbh a hero in one persons eyes could be a villain in another. But I'd say someone who stands for human rights and freedoms is a hero.
