Everyone has their own rules that they play by. There are "formal" rules to play by, such as those enforced by Smogon, The Pokémon Company International (ruleset named VGC), PokeBattle, and even the new Skillmons created recently.

Do you have rules you play by? If so, are they from a competitive organization?

My rule for my own normal battling is no legendaries unless they are UU or below. Otherwise, I don't really follow anything, including recommended Smogon movesets or anything. I like doing original interesting things that people don't expect, like Sableye with Shadow Sneak or a Phys Atk Sceptile or Clefable.

@[member="Sachi-Shimazu"] I remember using those rules. I think everyone has used them at some point, so they're a classic.
Back when I started playing against other people, the rules were: no legends, no pseudo legends, item clause, and species clause. Had some great times like that. Bronzong on a rain team was one of my personal favorites at this time. :)

I try to limit myself to only 2 legendary or event Pokémon on a team, despite the fact that I normally play the Ubers tier more than any other tier. I also always abide by the swagger, status, baton pass and sleep clauses.

Mostly Smogon rules. It's used by mostly everyone and I find it the easiest to go by since I've been using them for years. Unless I'm playing on the Battle Spot, I'll always use Smogon rules.

I play 100% of my battles by Smogon Rules 100% of the time. I've been lurking Smogon's site for about 5 or six years, & been on their forums for almost three. Unless I'm playing VGC or Battle Spot, I go by their rules.

I go by my own rules really. I only agree with a few things from Smogon (Such as the Ban of M-Gengar and M-Kanga.)

If i'm playing doubles I go under VGC rules.

I play by both Smogon and Nintendo's rules. I think overall, I like Nintendo's rules better. Sure, you can't play with Mew or any of its clones, or several other legendaries, but at least moves like Swagger are allowed. Smogon has gotten far too strict over the years. A lot of players don't realize that there's a counter for everything.

@[member="Nator"] I agree, though the reason that you can counter/check anything and everything in VGC to some extent is the presence and enforcement of double battles. Doubles are a largely less restrictive tier because instead of needing to continuously switch to counters, two Pokémon can work together to take care of a threat. That's also why Protect is a lot more viable and common in VGC.

I generally don't play by any rules, well when I play Wi-Fi cartridge battles. When I'm doing my gym leader duties I use the LV League rules of course. I liked the '14 VGC rules and had made a team for it, sadly it got lost. But in general I really don't care much about rules as I really just wanna play, sadly that also means I sometimes meet Pokémon I really don't wanna meet like Mega Rayquaza.

@[member="Karzarill"] I don't think anyone wants to meet a Mega Rayquaza. You're not alone :s

@[member="Kouhai"] I know, that thing is just a monster, but I can't do much about it when doing random Wi-Fi battles sadly. T_T

I play with the Smogon rules and VGC rules. I like playing different things. Pokebattle and Skillmons are...I don't know..I don't feel attraction yet, even if it is new :/

I kinda play by my own rules, except I don't use anything on the VGC banlist or some of the Megas in Ubers like Mega Gengar or Mega Kangaskhan. I guess you could say I play by VGC rules but I tend to do 6v6 doubles and apply it to 6v6 singles as well. I certainly don't follow Smogon tiers, although a lot of the Pokémon I use are OU or UU anyway and there's things like species clause that I follow just for the sake of variety.

As many Pokémon UU or below, but can only have one OU and one Uber Pokémon. Believe this allows for a more diverse gameplay aspect

@[member="NativeBlasion"] that's an interesting point. I can agree with it, however. Overall, low-tier Pokémon tend to be more fun to use (at least for me) since they can be "high-risk-high-reward" cases. Just take Slurpuff for instance....

I normally play by Smogon rules, though Skillmons is so magical.

    I actually used to play on PokeBattle, during the closed beta, but gave up once M-Khan was banned. ;-;
