I use iCap and have been using it since 2012 if I'm not mistaken.
Why? Because unlike other screenshot programs such as Gyazo and Lightshot, iCap links you to the direct image instead of a page with the image and the site's template around it.
What I'm talking about is the following:
    http://i.icap.me/37414376370888deb.png
    http://i.icap.me/37414376372331d4a.png

That's one of the main reasons I use it rather than any other screencap program, but I also like it because it's fast and simple, but so are most other screencap programs.

What screencap program do you use and why?

And if you don't already use a screencap program, click on one of the links below to download one - they're free!

    Gyazo - https://gyazo.com/
    Lightshot - http://prnt.sc/

I create screenshots using Mac OS X's built in screen capturer since it's fast and easy. You just click Command + Shift + 4 and you can select an area of the screen you want to capture. Then when I want to upload it, I use Lightshot print.sc since it's as easy as dragging the screenshot to the browser.

    I use this one:

As soon as I found out what it actually did, I've been using it whenever possible (and appropriate).

I do see the merit of programs like Gyazo and Lightshot to create temporary URLs simply for the purpose of screenshots, and I'll admit that the URL being temporary makes it very convenient, but I haven't used screenshots enough to justify that - if I make a screenshot, the goal is for it to generally stick around long-term. Plus, there are places like Photobucket where the images can be deleted later anyway.

Actually, I can only speak on iCap and possibly Gyazo when I say this, but all screenshots taken are never deleted. I have a few screenshots from a few years bookmarked and the original links are still the exact same as they were when they were first created.
All your screenshots are stored in an online folder that is controlled via your account, such as Photobucket in a sense, where you can go back and see all the screenshots you've taken and also delete the ones you don't want.

Screenshots taken with Gyazo won't be deleted, but you have to keep the URL somewhere around if you want to see the full-size picture later or just simply pay some money.

In that case, I suppose it is not much different than any other image-hosting site; it just removes the extra step of having to save and upload your screenshot yourself. ...Good to know; thanks for telling me.

I just use the built in Snipping Tool and click/drag the area of my screen I want to capture. After that I check to see if the snip looks good and if it is I save the image and upload to imgur to share. The nice thing about the snipping tool is that you can simply just select the area of your screen you want to make into an image as opposed to the whole thing and it even comes with a built in pen and highlighter you can customize to an extent and use before you save the image. It really comes in handy for sure!

I personally use Gyazo. I personally use it to take "temporary" screenshots. It's also nice that you can take gif instead of a regular screenshot, or even simply upload a picture to Gyazo for quick sharing. The gifs tend to have quite poor quality, but it can be quite useful. Example of a gif taken with Gyazo.

Here I am, clicking these sample pics on the first post. Gasp! That's meee! /warmandfuzzyforsomereason

Even after reading this discussion, I don't see the purpose of having an actual application just for making and uploading screencaps. It just seems like it's trying to reinvent the wheel.

Here's what I do: Printscreen button (like many of you above), paste that into paint.net, use the rectangle select + crop tool, save that, upload it.

It has the added benefits of letting me review the image to make sure it is exactly what I want, edit if it isn't, and also choose which image host I actually want to use instead of the built-in one for the screencapper. As far as my needs go, I don't see a reason why I would need anything different.

I'm so used to hitting print screen and then editing the screencap as necessary in a photo-manip program or even using G.I.M.P.'s in-built screen grabbing and then tossing it onto snag.gy whenever. I like using Joxi for Chrome to capture a screencap of full-length webpages too.

Personally I use lightshot. I downloaded it quite a while back when a bunch of youtubers I used to watch were promoting the feature. It's pretty fast and simple to use, so I don't really mind it at all. However, for a while, I just used a program on my computer called "Snipping Tool" which essentially does the same thing, just without it directly being uploaded onto the internet.

I use Lightshot Screenshot. It's very reliable and works like a charm. Also, if needed, I use my laptop's screenshot function - either fullscreen or the manual selector, depending on the situation.

Personally, I use Lightshot. I don't remember how exactly I came across it, but I never really saw a reason to change.

I used Lightshot on occasion, even though usually I'm just relying on hitting the Print Screen button when I feel like to capture and edit my screenshots.

I use SnippingToolPlusPlus since it's highly configurable. The only real downside is that the screenshot annotator could use some improvement. I have it so that it uploads the screenshot to imgur and copies the url automatically, as well as save it to a file in "My Pictures".
You can find it here: snippingtoolpluspl.us

On my old laptop I used to use the snipper tool, but since Lord Vain has been using puush for so long, I figure I could use it as well. It isn't bad, but it can be a pain to use sometimes since it took a moment to install it on my Mac, but it still works.

I use the beautiful PrtScn, then paste the picture in Paint. Cutting off the edges is optional, but I usually just upload them right away. It might take some time, but I'm one of those people who doesn't have her own computer and isn't allowed to download anything, which means this is the quickest way.

Unfortunately I cannot record videos as it says my computer is strong enough :( But the screenshot taker is efficient though, thanks windows.

I used to use the screen capture until I came across "Nimbus" It's a chrome add on that lets you take a screenshot and annotate it
