This question is actually spectacularly easy for me, because there were very few games that came out in 2017 that I was even interested in at all (and even fewer that I have access to - since I own only a 3DS for newer games). Indeed, the first game I thought would come to mind actually came out in late 2016, so that's out of the running. So I can say, with absolute certainty, that Etrian Odyssey V is my "2017 Game of the Year". Granted, Superstar Saga DX comes in at a really close second (and I mean REALLY close), but Superstar Saga already captured my heart back in 2004, so it's assured the spot anyway - I have to give a spot to the new guy. Both of those games are games that I would like to replay again very soon, as I loved them both to pieces.
For me, it's gotta be Super Mario Odyssey. I enjoyed every second of that game and I still play it quite periodically because completing the game, although really long, is super fun. It breaks away from the main Mario formula in a way that's new but the main objective is still there (find princess defeat giant reptile blah blah). Want to abandon Peach so you can go collect more sparkly things? Now you can! Admittedly I was a little sad when SMO didn't get Game of the Year, but all that matters is that this game is a masterpiece and I found myself smiling involuntarily like a small child playing this. Perfect.
Definitely Super Mario Odyssey. Do I even need to explain why? @SkittleBox pretty much summed it up already.
I actually don't own any games that have come out this year (aside from FNaF6, and that's more of a lore exercise for me than anything else, since I hate horror to begin with), but from the few games I have played my vote goes to Super Mario Odyssey. Once I got used to the buttons I had a lot of fun jumping and capping my way through NDC (which is one of the areas available in the demo). That soundtrack, too... perfection.
Easily Nioh for PS4. If anything at least it wasn't a buggy mess and had a nice variety of features to allow me to pour over 160 hours into it without getting bored. And I have barely scratched the surface of the DLC content too, cuz even at level 170 I am having a really difficult time, which is refreshing for me.
If we aren't counting Pokémon games then it would easily go to Super Mario Odyssey. Seriously, even if you don't like the Mario franchise you should still play the game. This game will leave a smile on your face.
Cuphead or Player Unknown. Haven't played either personally, but I've seen playthroughs and man, are they fun. Cuphead because I absolutely love the rubber hose animation as well as the 1920's swing aesthetic, also had great graphics and very unique bosses. Player Unknown just because I really love the battle royale setting, the tension and anticipation of it all, and it was a ton of fun to watch other gamers play it.
I think I have to agree with the game awards: BotW was a world piece that influences too much to say it didn't have an impact on the gaming business. I am replaying it atm on the Switch and I can't help but get that giddy feeling every time I revisit a place or see something that I had never seen before during my Wii U playthrough.
