What older generations had the most influence on the new generation games we play today?

If I say Generation 1 because it started it all, how mad would you get at me? :P

well of course the first got huge influence for being the first, but I say the 3rd one brings a whole lot too with the introduction of abilities and natures, but the 2nd bought two new types, the eggs and genders, we could now have baby pokemons, that is influence too. it's actually a tricky question you bought up there >:

If I look at X/Y, I'd say 3rd, because HOENN CONFIRMED they gave us a lot of hints on OR/AS, such as the pokemart music.

I choose Gen 4 mainly because of the Physical/Special split, WiFi trading/battling, and being able to run inside buildings. Of course, it was also that gen that Apricorn Balls were re-introduced to us.

    Gen one because Pokémon
Gen two because a lot of small things
    Gen three because abilities
    Gen four because physical/special split
Gen five because infinite TM's and Hidden Abilities
Gen six because Mega Evolution and Fairy type

Well each game brings something new that influences each game afterward so it's a bit of a hard choice.
Probably gen two or three though, because of things like genders, breeding, natures, abilities and probably some more things that I'm not thinking of.

Each generation does kind of have its own influences that shape what we now play. Generation one started it all, so it gets credit for that. Generation two introduced shiny Pokémon, animated Pokémon in battle, Day and Night time differences, and most importantly the option to choose the Gender of the Protagonist. Generation three added more technicalities with abilities, EVs, enhanced breeding mechanics, Pokémon Ribbons, Pokémon Contest Stats, and Double Battles. Generation Four made things global with the GTS, Pal Pad, and option to battle and trade with friends across the globe, which was a huge step.Generation Four also had the Physical/Special split mentioned above which really impacted the competitive metagame. Generation 5 added features such as the ability to battle with anyone across the world without their friend code, triple battles, rotation battles, and global link features. There are also many other factors to consider, but a lot of the features mentioned above shape the content of X and Y or were upgraded in X and Y. To say that one generation contributed more would be difficult, as they all had their own excellent advances for their system capabilities, but I guess it all depends on what you think makes the game more exciting, complex, and enjoyable. :)

Hmm, I'd say it's a difficult decision between 3rd and 4th. 1st brought the actual game to us, but really, a lot of important changes have been made to the series since the first. Steel and Dark (hey, another reason that Mawile and Sableye are rivals) and the day/night system (which hasn't got much influence since Gen 5) in Gen 2. Gen 5 had the infinite TMs. Gen 6 had Megas and Fairy Types (insert a Mawile Sableye comment here).

But gen 3 and 4 had some of the more memorable influences. There were the abilities in Gen 3, as well as natures. Gen 4 brought us the split between special and physical. Gen 3 brought the contests (which were good), Gen 4 you could do them over wi-fi (i think). Gen 3 had secret bases, Gen 4 had the freaking underground. Gen three brought us remakes, Gen four brought HG/SS (which are my favourites). The two things that probably bring gen four up would be the introduction of Wi-fi and the special physical split.

I would have to say Gen's 1-3 they had a massive influence on how we all play Pokémon and how much it has evovled. I mean there is 719 pokemons from the original 151 i mean look how much it has grown over the years and all the installments of Pokémon games that have come out over the years. I truly think that Gen's 1-3 had a big influence in my opinon.

If we're talking what ones influenced it the most I'd say:
Gen 3: Abilities are huge game changers and it feels weird without them. DVs changed to IVs and EVs now work very differently. Overall Gen 3 did lots of technical changes that influence the games quite a bit.
Gen 4: The Physical/Special split and online connectivity. The Physical/Special split completely changed which Pokémon are useful and how useful they are. I'd say that's pretty big.

Competitively, this is probably the most important change. Physical/Special was important too, but the competitive game was so unbalanced without natures and abilities...

All of them influenced the games coming after them in some way, with the newest being a X/Y. Gen 1 was what started it all, in all its glitchy glory. Gen 2 added a lot of nice details such a night/day cycle, friendship evolution and day/night evolution (although no expansion was really done on this till gen 4 and then in gen 6). In Gen 3 things like abilities and natures popped up. Gen 4 gave us the physical/special split like many have already said. Gen 5, infinite TM usage, need i say more? Gen 6 showed us mega evolutions, the new fairy type and trainer customization.

Obviously each gen has brought new features that bring new influences. I'd say gen 4 though, which brought WiFi battling and trading, which really let the competitive side of Pokémon grow.

I'm going with gen 4 with the physical and special split as well as the amount of evolutions and types of evolution given to Pokémon from previous generations.

Keeping with Gen 1. It started it all, and it still continues to influence, well, pretty much everything.

Gen 1. I mean if we didn't have that Gen, Pokémon wouldn't be here!

Gen 4. The physical/special split made it so that competitive battling was more usable.

If you asked me, I'd say that generation two played a huge part in the survivability of the series. It was faced with that most hardest of tests; sequel syndrome. Game Freak had to come out of the gates running, proving that instead of delivering generic rehashes of the same property, with each succeeding generation they could mix the status quote up a lot. Signs on, the series has proven to withstand the test of time.

Probably Gen II. Gold/Silver were easily one of the greatest sequels in video game history.
