I know that berries have usage in competitive, but I want to know if anybody uses berries during playthroughs? I have never liked them very much, seeing that they are one time usage. If you use them online, you can get them back, but ingame is one and done. I find other held items to be more useful, especially with all of the items that get added every generation. Do you use berries during your playthroughs? Do you use the berry fields? What do you like about berries? What don't you like?
I usually use berries when I'm in the early parts of the game and don't have any other held items. Also, in Sun/Moon I've been using a ton of Leppa Berries to SOS chain.
I have actually used berries often in playthroughs because they are free for the most past and as long as you grow enough of them you will always be able to heal.
I use berries a lot, but not as hold items. I mostly just stock up on a bunch of Oran/Sitrus berries and the berries that heal status ailments to use as free medicine. When training to get my Pokémon up to level 100, I'll sometimes grow leppa berries to restore pp so I don't have to go back to a Pokémon center. I mean, hey, have enough berries and you won't need to use the Pokémon center at all. It was really convenient in HGSS that you could just carry berry pots around with you, so I just spent all my time training on Mt. Silver and rarely ever left. Which I guess is probably what Red was doing too.
To be honest, berries are more end-game than early or mid for me. I try to find a Sitrus and grow as many as I can, and from there, I just use them instead of potions. One reason is because they're free, and two is that they can recover a bit of health when away from a Pokémon Center and you don't have potions. So, in all, they're useful, but only at the end of the game for me. Although in the Mystery Dungeon series, they're actually a lot more helpful. Is that even relevant? I don't know, but I'm still stating it.
I love using berries and I spent a lot of my time growing them. They are often more convenient than buying stuff. Because I forgot most of the time to buy the status restoring items
I used berries in Silver and Crystal and haven't bothered with them since, haha. It's too much effort to constantly harvest the things, and honestly I don't think the games are challenging enough to really need them - everything dies in one or two super-effective attacks if your level is high enough, and I like grinding. I just use potions and status heal items if I need them. xD
I generally use the berries early game like ridlins said, and for SOS chaining (leppa berries are my favorite berry, partly because I learned they were free ethers, partly... i don't really know. Apples maybe?) Once I have better held Items berry usage tends to dip as potions are better healers than berries. Though In Sun and Moon, I've grown heap tons to sell for barely any cash. I like the berry idea, but in the end, most just aren't that useful in the main games. If you aren't making poffins or pokeblocks, there isn't much use for the majority of the types.
My friend and I don't use berries very often. We just kind of hoard them. I make a big deal out of getting a large amount of Leppas, more than the others, though. I do wish they brought Poffins back, though...
That's the hardest game to use berries in as well. It has few if any berry fields. I'm impressed. Your not wrong though, so much poison
Seeing all these posts about the usefulness of berries makes me want to use them more often. If anything, I used them as free status removers. Or maybe a Super-Effective move, if I was having trouble with a Gym Leader.
I don't, haha. It's easy enough to cure status conditions via Pokémon Refresh in gen VII, and Full Heals or other status healers. Plus they're a lot easier to access than scrolling through your bag for a particular berry. Berries kinda just...sit around for me with almost no use. EV lowering ones are nice when you want to reset them though, but even then I already have my EV training clearly mapped out and don't usually need to use those particular berries.
That's was I was going to say. Sometimes, a pecha berry alone can save you time, money, and, more importantly, bring a smile to your face.
