Just as the topic title asks:

    Why do you battle competitively?

Did you find it to be the best part of Pokémon? Do you battle to meet new people, or to have a connection with people you already know? Let us know what your reason is!

I battle competitively because I actually was inspired by the great world players back when VGC wasn't VGC--the DPP days, where matches were played on Pokémon Battle Revolution. I found it awesome that there were kids even older than I am playing Pokémon still because they loved to battle, and it seemed really fun. The rest is history :)

I also started playing competitively in DPP days. I don't remember exactly why I started it, but I remember how I started.

I joined to Marriland's forum, and I started doing random Wi-Fi matches with other people, I had no idea about IV's or EV's back then, and didn't even know much about natures. Yeah, I lost almost of all the matches. I played mostly with Smogon's OU rules, and when I decided to check out their website, I found battle simulator called Shoddy Battle, and started playing solely on there. During that time I had small knowledge of IV's, EV's and Natures, so I mainly used simple spreads like 252/252/4.

For me it's the learning experience.

Learning team synergy, predicting people, understanding what a Pokémon's role and purpose is. Experimenting different sets that aren't commonly used. It's addicting!

Just for fun really. I've never bothered to look up guides or tutorials for it online, I've just played and enjoyed myself that way. 8)

Like Ben mentioned above, I battle just for fun. I've never really been very serious in competitive battling and am always too lazy to build more new teams, so I just do randbats or battle with my existing OU or NU teams, although it's nice if I do win.

All the mentioned reasons and others. I have a lot of reasons to play like this and no matter the mood I always have a reason. Maybe because I like it or because I want to win or I also want to see a little guy crying because I destroyed his Pokémon but the fact is... that I want to play competitively. (Sometimes I am so cruel XD)

There is no clear answer, as player you want to aim for something and this thing or feeling that you are searching for ,sometimes, is different from how it was at the begining because time made you change for good or bad.

The reasons can evolve with time and you are never sure about something when you know that time will be one of your factors, and even if every player is different from another there are moments when our goals are similar and we will cross our paths pretty often but the important stuff here is that our ways to reach them will be always a personal decision.

Our choices make us and we make our choices

My competitive fighting started in gen5, when I learned about natures EVs IVs and the like. Before that I still trained people to fight, but didn't know what I was doing so they weren't very good...
I love the competitive fights though. Strategy games are just my favorite thing in the world and I get into competitive games so much, its just loads and loads of fun to me trying to create an original set and predict my opponent.

    Because it's fun...?

I don't have some underlying reason to it. If it weren't fun, I wouldn't do it.

I agree with this. I do battle competitively because I learn each Pokémon's best moves and how to use them and stuff. You shall add this in your poll :3

Originally I started to battle competitively in December 2011. On another forum I was in a little battle guild, and I kept getting thrashed by lots of members in the guild. Eventually I had the feeling that they thought I was the weakest link since I was still a casual. I wanted to learn how to battle competitively to beat all the people who've beaten me before (Which I have done now, except for one person.)

Otherwise I do it for fun now, and plus I can't go back to casual play. It's hard for me to revert back now.

    Agreed. I can't play "casual" anymore unless it's a spinoff game :(

I battle competitively because ever since Gen 5's Weather Battles, I felt that Pokémon isn't just about beating the game anymore, but finding the perfect strategy, meeting new people, and having fun while doing so.

My OU is really rusty though. I'm more into Monotype and Random Battles nowadays. I like fighting Fighting types using my Mono Normal team, and whatever weakness I have. It makes me feel like a smart and very complex person just by winning against them.

I like competitive battles for the thrill and fun of it. Getting in a close match with an opponent matching your own skill level and just barely winning is actually exhilarating, and it certainly gives a sense of pride and enjoyment for me.

I also really like seeing what pokes and sets other people run. Sometimes it gives me inspiration for using sets and mons that I've never even considered before!

The people are often a mixed back imho, especially on showdown and wifi, but I do love just meeting people at school and having a battle. Even if I run into people with terrible attitudes, I can just remember the awesome people I've met in previous battles. :D

I fell in love with Pokémon battling because I enjoy winning battles. It feels incredible when you play mind games with your opponent and you somehow manage to pull it off. Same as when you have a planned strategy and everything works out in the battle. I get really excited. It's a good feeling, really.

I battle competitively as this allows me to see that all my hard work revising the rules, building a perfect team, making stratagies all slot in place and work like clockwork. This is also why I like mods like tekkit and feed the beast. You get the best feeling when it all works.

I am someone who loves to teambuild and work on the theorymonning aspect of competitive battling. Don't get me wrong battling is fun to me as well, but I personally love building the perfect team for me and using it to lead me to victory.

I got into competitive by some friends saying that it'd be easy to get a scholarship, at the Pokémon Champs, but it really isn't all that easy with so much competition out there. It's fun though!~ XD
