Why hasn't there been a dark type gym?

I think they just forgot about a Dark type Gym in the first three generations or so, but after that, they just kept the tradition running. I don't mind it personally.

 

Dark type didn't come until Gen II, so I see why Gen I didn't have one, but ever since Gen II there hasn't been much of an excuse not to have one. Dark type isn't one those minority types like Dragon, so there's enough different Pokémon to make a gym leader specialize in it as well.

 

Because the gym'd be too dark? Ba dum tsh.
Honestly though, they've had at least one dark-type-themed Elite Four, so why not a gym? Perhaps they feel that ghost and dark types are too similar? Who knows.

 

that is a good question, I have hoped they would bring a dark type gym into X and Y when they first announced it but we had to do with fairy instead. maybe we will get one in gen VI if they ever make that generation.

 

Maybe because evil team tend to use a lot of the dark type Pokémon and they didn't want a gym leader to have those Pokémon as well? I really have no clue to be honest and that explanation has plenty of holes in it seeing how elite four members carry those dark types Pokémon. I just can't think of a great explanation.

 

Maybe they're saving up for a big surprise? There's no way to say why there are no dark type gyms, since there are steel gyms which are just as old as dark.

 

I honestly, don't know. Dark is my favorite type and there are enough Pokémon that are dark type to make an awesome gym leader. They however have had 2 dark elite 4 members, which is weird because there is always a gym leader that has the same typing as the Elite 4.

 

Hmmm, that's a good question but I would go with RedScizor's explanations about evil teams. Sounds quite legit. ^^

 

I've wondered that too, if I can recall they have had a gym for each type, even normal got some, and most recently fairy was released and it too had a gym.

Bug: 3
Ghost: 2
Steel: 2
Fire: 3
Water: 5
Grass: 4
Electric: 5
Psychic: 3
Ice: 4
Dragon: 2
Fairy: 1

So, I see no reason why there shouldn't be one, doesn't make much sense to me, and there are plenty of dark types to use. I'm hoping that after the Hoenn remakes they will have a game that features one.

 

I kind of support this idea. A dark type gym leader would have to have a dark/evil theme to it and maybe they don't want that? Although I think past gym leaders like Giovanni would have qualified in that department, but he used rhinos and fluffy cats. A dark themed gym plus a broody, plotting guy that fits the dark type stereotype plus some evil looking Pokémon (Absol was first introduced as like The Disaster Pokémon, Sableye is mega creepy, Houndoom's practically the devil and Mandibuzz is a vulture which eats dead things). But yeah, mix all that and you get....Batman....or at least some angst lol.

Still, it looks like they're running out of other types to use so maybe we'll get one soon.

 

Like Kuroida said, Giovanni qualified in both departments, and in X/Y we had a high ranking member of Team Flare as one of the E4 members, but neither of them used dark types. Maybe we might get a dark type gym where the gym leader is/was a member of the evil team in the next gen of games (unless we get a whole new region alongside Hoenn in OR/AS).

 

It couls be possible that the reason is because of the poeple in charge think that its better to have dark type with the elite 4. But its probably because they didn't put it in yet. Idk tbh

 

Because the Dark Type Elite Four members (Karen, Sydney, Grimsley) got jealous and because they're Dark Type E4 they decided that they would "eliminate" any Dark Gym Leaders.

 

Close, but not quite. See, there's actually a vast campaign of discrimination against the dark type. Because gym leaders have such influential positions in their respective towns, they're forbidden from choosing the dark type as their specialty. The Elite Four, on the other hand, seem to only be there to battle League challengers, so they're allowed to have dark types (but I'm willing to be you there's a tax or something).

Or, sure, it might just be because the dark type is often portrayed as evil, like RedScizor said. But I think a massive, inter-regional conspiracy to belittle the glorious dark type is far more likely. Don't go, I have proof! The fairy type is evidence of the conspiracy! Don't believe the lies! Wake up, mareeple!

 

I think that they just couldn't think of a Dark-type gym design that was also not scary to children.

well I think Gamefreak hates dark types.... its the only type with no gym leader...
and also it has only 3 e4s Karen btw doesn't realy count as she has like 2 non dark types.... Sidney and grimsley do though in my mind so 2... so that means dark types are revered in a way...
