I'll say outright that I have not been a fan of Windows 8 since I started looking into it. However, we've been thinking, my step dad and I, that we'll get me a new laptop, so then he can get Lady, who is my current laptop. I've been looking around on Newegg and Tigerdirect and playing with a few in best buy and such, but they all seem to only roll around with Windows 8 now. There's only one laptop I've found that I like that had windows 7 still, and it doesn't seem to be much use in trying to figure out a way to downgrade the windows 8 laptops back to windows 7.

Now, I got some questions for people who have 8, as to try and get myself prepared for the inevitable switch.

    1. I get the entire new layout of the start up, and I noticed that all the in store "try me out" laptops have IE10 or whatever number they're up to now. My question is, can I kick IE off the menu, and replace it with Google Chrome?

    2. All the computers I've looked at have been phenomenal with gaming features, though I remember reading somewhere that 8 screwed over some games. Is this an actual issue, or am I imagining things?

    3. How much control do I have over the new start up menu? How much can I rearrange things?

    4. What did you upgrade from, and how long has it taken you to get used to 8?

I'll probably have more questions, though answers to these questions and any other input you'd like to share would be helpful.

I have Windows 8, so I can prolly answer some things as best as possible:

    1. Of course you can use Google Chrome on your desktop just like normal; there's even a Metro version if you ever need it.

    2. Windows 8 is lightning fast when it comes to loading up games (and even loading up the computer in general, but it could be because I have a new computer too); there are some problems on certain games (particularly the Telltale games like Walking Dead, Poker Night 2, etc.) but the Steam forums have fixes that might help you out on those problems on those games. Other than that, you can also update your graphics card firmware whenever possible, but for the most part, there's not a lot of compatibility errors that are too noticeable.

    3. You can move tiles wherever you like and even change the size on them whenever, and you'll even have more control on that when WIndows 8.1 comes out, BUT if you're like me and you absolutely want the old start menu and its functions back, I have two words to tell you: Classic Shell http://www.classicshell.net/

    4. I got a new gaming computer that happened to have Windows 8 built in; like I said in question 3, most of the problems that you may have with getting used to Windows 8 should be alleviated with Classic Shell, which is a godsend because the new start menu isn't as good when it comes to the search engine and the like, and I personally believe that Metro should've been a seperate thing.

I hope this answered most of your questions. : )

Thanks for taking time to answer, you answered them pretty well. I hear a lot of people use Classic Shell, so I'll keep that in mind if I do end up getting Windows 8. Overall, are you happy with Windows 8?

Yeah, as soon as you get Classic Shell installed, Windows 8 ain't that bad; that was the biggest drawback for me when they removed the start menu that everyone has used. Don't be fooled with their claims that they "Brought back" the start button in Windows 8.1 though, it will only take you to the "metro" start button from what I understand. Other than that, it's lightning fast (have an Asus Essentio with a Nvidia GTX 650 PNY 8GB graphics card).

Alright, thanks for the extra input. We went ahead and got a Windows 8 laptop, a nice Acer that looks like it can pretty much rip through any game I got that I can throw at it. It'll probably get in within the week, so I'll be able to play with windows 8 for a while before getting the Class Shell.

1.Yes you can change it to Google Chrome or other search engines you prefer.

2.Well the problem with gaming with windows 8 is that when you start the program it automatically takes 50gb. And my windows 8 computer has no system unit so everything is built in to my monitor. And since everything is on the monitor theres barely any space for anything so I cant change my CPU or get for RAM so I recommend that the computer has a system unit and not everything built into the monitor like a lot of windows 8 computers.

3.Well in your start menu you can move tiles and put them into groups and naming that group of tiles. In desktop mode you have as much control as you did in previos versions of windows.

4.Well I didn't upgrade my dad bought it for Christmas when I told him not to buy a windows 8 computer but he did and he said that they didn't sell windows 7 computers anymore but I see them all the time we go to best buy. Well it took me a month to accept windows 8 so I learned more and more about and maybe find a way to improve performance and memory.

Thanks for the input! I'm probably going to have the upgrading issue as well, but mine would be because it's a laptop. I move around too much to have a desktop, or else I'd be computerless for months at a time. My main concern really is how much I can customize it away from Microsoft's setup. Glad to know that I can change it, though it's still slightly irritating that I got to upgrade to 8, if I can even call it an upgrade. There wasn't a laptop we were looking at that had 7, unless it was completely crappy or the same grade as my current laptop.
