In case you haven't heard already, Microsoft will be ending support and updates for Windows Vista a week from tomorrow.

The end of support for the ill-received Windows release comes as part of the normal progression of Microsoft's support lifecycle policy, with mainstream support (service packs, feature and design changes, warranty claims, free non-security patches, etc.) having ended on April 10, 2012. On April 11th, after five years of Extended support (security updates available free of charge, feature/design changes and warranty claims no longer available, some paid support options remaining available), as just mentioned, anybody still running this version of Windows will be on their own, without the security patches required to maintain security. Also as a result, Internet Explorer 9 (which is the last version of Microsoft's legacy browser to support Vista) will no longer be supported.

It's also noteworthy that Google Chrome ended support for Vista a year ago, and many recent software packages and drivers no longer support Vista.

Another important thing to know is that Office 2007 support will be terminated six months afterwards, on October 10th of this year.

Share your thoughts about Windows Vista and its pending end of support.

Given how I continued to use Windows XP for long after it stopped being supported - partly due to my preference of XP over other OSs, partly due to my not having/willing to put down enough money for a new computer - I can't say I really feel much about it. (I only now no longer use it because I scrounged enough money for another computer - plus my other computer was 11 years old, and clearly deteriorated because of aging.)

If I actually used Vista, I'm sure I'd continue to use it. However, I never have, and in any case, most tech-savvy people will not be bothered by Microsoft's lack of support for Vista. After all, it's still going to work pretty much the same way, and Windows OS are similar enough to each other that they can get by with the same files.

In other words, business as usual. Nothing too bad.

I can't say I am surprised, Vista is old considering how many systems have come since them. They were really pushing those windows 8 and 10 upgrades so I can understand them cutting ties with older products.

I feel bad for saying this, but I can't tell if this is a serious question or if you're simply teasing...

    Ah, okay.

By 'support ending' for an OS, that just means that Microsoft (or whatever company in the context) won't be releasing security patches, customer support, or other upkeep things in regards to it - rather, they're going to focus their time and resources on newer systems.

That doesn't mean the older OSs will no longer work; it's just as far as security and keeping up-to-date are concerned, the user of the computer is 'on his/her own', so to speak - so you'll have to take care of your anti-virus/firewall needs yourself.

Normally this is not really a problem; most people keep their systems well-protected and furnished with whatever they need, and the vast abundance of third-party software out there has helped with that. Even if you had Vista (which you don't), it wouldn't be a problem. You'll still have it; you just wouldn't get help from Microsoft directly (which isn't that much of a big deal).

Did that make sense? I could be more specific if needed.

And since this is my 2500th post for post count, I feel like I should do something special, so...

Welp, so much for my old PC downstairs.
Is there any way to uograde to Windows 7 for free? I could only find paid packs online and I don't want to spend money on a computer that's 9 years old.
