This can go for either artists or writers. When you are working on a piece of art or literature, do you prefer to work in a messy space or do you like to have your work area squeaky clean? Also, do you prefer to be in a secluded area where there little to no people around, or do you like being out in the open and around other people? I try to keep my desk as clean as I can because it really frustrates me when my desk is too messy. I also prefer working where no one can see my art. I'm not sure why. I just don't want random people asking me about what I'm working on. The only one whose around when I work is my roommate.
I've never thought about my work environment before. I don't think I have a preference between a messy or clean environment as I write or draw. I don't even have a specific location that I feel more comfortable working in, I can honestly work anywhere. I don't like working in complete silence though. I won't say that it's boring, but I'm somehow able to focus on both my writing/drawing and whatever I'm watching/listening to more when I'm doing both at the same time. It's strange how inspirational crime shows can be. And even though I don't like people, I don't mind risking people seeing what I'm writing or drawing. Usually, I'm extremely aware of everybody around me, but when I write or draw, I'm just in my own little world, and those around me don't bother me at all, even when they ask about what I'm working on.
I have papers all over my desk, and I think that helps me be more creative? Being surrounded with little doodles while I draw makes me feel at home lol. And listening to music is a must, it helps me zone out and just enjoy drawing.
I haven't really thought about it either. But music surely helps me too! Music is great. Anyways, if I wanna start doodling at school, then I'll have to get used to whatever environment I'm in.
I have two phases to my making: the ideas and the execution. My ideas need to come when I'm distracted by something, and therefore it can't be in an empty workspace. Either in the shower or in the car or while working or while doing something that has a small part of my brain busy. But when it comes to executing the idea, I need clarity and emptiness. Everything in my workspace needs to be directly related to the project: whether I'm split-screen on my computer between the story and notes, or my desk is empty apart from my paper and my reference material; my visual and tactile space needs to be empty. Apart from that, I need to never have observers and never have silence when I'm working. I think about people too much, and will inherently get distracted if someone's nearby; and if my ears are empty then my mind will get distracted. Just some quiet background blues or metal ish music with no vocals will fill that space nicely!
You made me realize I have little doodles around my work space too. I guess seeing art helps the creative juices flow. I definitely can't have silence when I'm working either. I always have to listen to documentaries or have pretty lax music in the background to focus.
My desk is pretty messy, but it is mostly doodles/crochet work that is lying around on my desk when I draw/write
I prefer drawing at night with just a close light on my left side, with some music playing in the background. What I hate is that I always get too hot when drawing so I use a small fan to cool me off. That's what I prefer to do when I'm free to draw at home.
