    About the Band

The Red Masters formed primarily as a means for a group of friends to get together and play music for the fun of it. But after a smashing performance in Pallet Town's annual battle of the bands, they found themselves in demand all across the eight regions, but mainly in Kanto. While some critics have tried to classify them as smooth jazz, their unique fusion of 80's pop and rock with jazz-like solos and improvisations and instruments from around the world creates a unique and energetic sound you have to hear to believe.

Even the audience becomes part of the show--not only is singing along and dancing welcomed and encouraged, Ash is also known to play musical games with the audience, so no two concerts will ever be the same.

The band is best known for its iconic red lightsticks and its enthusiastic and caring fandom, known as RedHeads.

The Band's Current Lineup (as of Sword/Shield)

Ash--lead vocals, lead guitar, flutes and whistles, harmonica, EWI, ukulele, trumpet (rarely), and fiddle (rarely)

    Misty--keyboards, backup vocals, songwriting

Brock--drums, backup vocals (rarely), chief songwriter

    Kamon--bass guitar, backup vocals (rarely)

Lyra--saxophones (soprano, alto, and tenor), trumpet, trombone (rarely), songwriting

    May--backup vocals, rhythm guitar

    Dawn--backup vocals, percussion

    Serena--backup vocals, rhythm guitar, fiddle

    Chris--backup vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriting

All three girls sing lead if a song was originally sang by a girl--Dawn has a strong and powerful voice, Serena has a powerful voice with a little sweetness, and May has a sweet voice with a little power, so who sings lead depends on the song's character. Each of them have also sang duets with Ash.

Chris will sing lead if Ash is busy with one of his other instruments (his signature cover is the band's version of "Take the Long Way Home"--this way, Ash can focus on the harmonica part). Unlike Ash, who has a full on powerful voice, Chris' voice is powerful, yet sweet. He is also known to help the girls sing harmony, or sing with Ash in a duet.

Brock is not opposed to providing rimshots for Ash's or Chris' particularly groan-worthy jokes, and drumrolls for giveaways.

    The Band's Current Plans

After doing a few smaller regional tours, the gang is gearing up for a full blown world tour spanning from Kanto to Galar, which they deem The Red Letter Tour. Both RedHeads and the band are eagerly looking forward to the tour, and especially Chris' debut before his hometown crowd in Vermilion City

    The Stage Setup

In most settings, the stage is divided up into three levels. The bottom level, or "the floor", is where Ash, Dawn, May and Lyra are positioned. Ash is at center stage, with his instrument rack in an out of the way corner near the second level. Dawn is on Ash's left, and May is on Ash's right. Lyra is to Dawn's left, with her own instrument rack nearby.

The middle level is where Kamon stands, behind May and close to Misty. Serena stands on the middle level, behind Ash. This way, the girls create a triangle shape, allowing their harmonies to blend at every angle. Chris is generally located on the middle level near where May is, but sometimes he will be on the lower level with Ash.

The drums and the piano are set up on the upper level, but Brock and Misty reach them from the middle level. The drums sit on the far left of the upper level, with a stick rack for storing any of the special sticks (and spare normal ones) Brock may need for the show.

The piano is located to the far right on the upper level, but Misty reaches it from the middle level. Being a digital piano, Misty can generate a beat when Brock needs a break, or supplement the live drums with more exotic sounds.

If the three level design isn't possible to create due to space or time constraints, the band has a two level set up and a spread out set up.

    The Practice Space

If the band just needs a general space to practice, they practice in the large and spacious basement of the Ketchum house (which the group simply calls "the basement". If they have a gig coming up, or just want a nicer space to play in, there are practice rooms available at the local branch of Morningsong Music, a high quality chain of music stores known around the Pokeworld.

When the group is in the basement, the instruments are set up in a spread out set up. When the group is in a practice room, they use a two level set up.

Generally, the group practices their parts individually every day, but the band gets together to practice two to three times a week. Three practices in a week typically occur if the group has a show coming up, but all parties are warned well in advance when one of these occasions is approaching.

    Repertoire and Traditions

The band's repertoire is an even mix of covers and original material. When the band plays a cover, if a male originally sang the song, Ash or Chris will sing lead. If a female originally sang the song, either May, Dawn, or Serena will sing lead depending on the song's character.

The band is often praised for how well they plan their sets, so that the music naturally flows from one song into another. One example of this natural flow is the combination of the original ballad "Still Waters" and a cover of "Mas Que Nada" (because Ash uses the acoustic guitar in both songs, the ending of "Still Waters" sets up the perfect transition to "Mas Que Nada".

One of the band's most iconic symbols is the red lightsticks fans are given to wave at night and indoor concerts. RedHeads have invented thousands of patterns to wave the lightstick in--some of them for a single specific song. The band has caught onto this, so May and Dawn will wave their hands in the pattern they want when a song starts (but sometimes Ash will join in the waving).

During daytime shows, RedHeads are not opposed to waving PokeNavs, Match Calls, 3DSes, and even red towels in lieu of lightsticks.

Of all the instruments Ash plays in a show, the concert flute is the most iconic--often to the point Ash will play it at least once in a show. RedHeads know that Ash collects all manner of flutes and whistles, and will often send him instruments as gifts.
