As the title says, this topic is for discussing and sharing ideas about how to write disabled characters. I have tried on several occasions to write various disabled characters with mixed success.

Here's a little bit about each of my characters that have a disability or impairment.

First up is Luka, she's roughly the age of 15 and was born with moderate to severe hearing loss in her right ear and total hearing loss in her left ear due to her mother contracting Rubella during her pregnancy. Currently, she has a cochlear implant on her right side but finds the world with sound confusing and disorientating so she only uses her implant when it is absolutely necessary, for example, when she is walking home from school. 90% of Luka's communication is done by British Sign Language
Originally I wrote Luka as a shy and timid little girl with a very fantasy-based view of real life. However, she recently received an overhaul where I kept the fantastical, daydreaming part of her personality and replaced the timidity and shyness with a much more calm and level-headed version of her.

I also have created Magnolia. Magnolia is slightly younger than Luka and is totally unable to speak due to a problem with the formation of her vocal chords. Like Luka, she also communicates via BSL but also uses a writing pad to communicate if people do not understand her. Her personality is best described as hot and fiery. As a rule, Magnolia doesn't take any pity from anyone.

Third up is Kaori, she's currently my only wheelchair dependant character due to having a heart condition so she uses the wheelchair to avoid overexertion and for when she tires. She's also joint oldest of my disabled characters, tied with Kaiyo (Yes I mix them up).
Overall she fits between Luka and Magnolia in terms of personality and is more sensitive to others emotions than both of them

Finally I have Kaiyo. She's the only one with some form of canonical mental difficulties in the form of PTSD. She's a military veteran set in the Overwatch universe with an amputated right arm, just above the shoulder. because of this she also has motor difficulties and flashbacks.
In the group she's the most volatile and easily disturbed
Have any of you tried this? what have been your results and what are your characters like?

A note: Any intentionally offensive posts will get reported to the staff. I don't wanna see any ableism or harmful stereotypes.

Hm, I have been trying to write a character. Her name is Alessa and due to an accident shattered her knee and it never truly healed right. However as I normally have very energetic characters, she is a bit hard for me to write, as she is physically not capable of doing some thing.

Heck, my main OC has several mental disorders. Hannah White has Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, High-Functioning Autism, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. 14 in the current story, and she's friends with Lindsey Stirling, who in fact, has an actual learning disorder called Cross Dominance, which is a version of Dxylesia (don't know the actual spelling).

I had a character with Bipolar, NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), and PTSD. As a result he was very unpredictable and found it difficult to form interpersonal relationships, intense mood swings, and severe impulsiveness. He wanted to make friends, really, but people would find it hard to keep up with him.

Hm... I have two that I mentioned in Pokémon Resonance.

The first is Emma, a blind Espeon that was once human. As a human, she could see through the eyes of her Growlithe, but with her Growlithe killed by the hands of the ones who turned her into an Espeon to begin with, she now relies on Future Sight to see the world around her.

The second is a Trainer named Carol. Unlike Emma, she was born with the inability to speak. Instead of using her voice, she speaks to her Pokémon with her mind, allowing her to command them in battle.

I also have one that I was planning to introduce as the protagonist of a PMD spin off of Pokémon Resonance called PMD Dissonance. The story is following an optimistic human-turned-Mareep named Ashelyn who travels with a human hating Treecko named Lin, and an energetic Charmander named Haruto. I can't remember what her disability was, but I think I was planning on autism since it is something have myself. I also vaguely remember starting this PMD story somewhere, but I can't remember anything except how the story starts.

I have written three disabled characters, specifically when I made a long Pokémon-related series called Earth's Protectors in which the Pokémon are either superheroes/super villains. These particular characters I introduced in the final arc of the first story were the gen 5 monkey trio, specifically their second forms. And yeah, much like the main series itself, I based them on the three wise monkeys, giving Simipour the inability to speak, making Simisage deaf and Simisear blind. (Yeah, I know I technically gave them each the wrong disability, but something worth note is that this story doesn't really follow Pokémon series logic. After all, it takes place in a reality where a punch or a kick can hurt a ghost type) And even then, the idea behind them in the story is that they're veteran fighters who teach the main character's trainers, specifically Aipom, to fight by having her face them all in combat while proving that their disabilities don't exactly make them weaklings. You can actually read the chapter in question right here: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11576837/24/Earth-s-Protectors-The-Ultimate-World-Team-Tournament Though the entire story was posted in the literature section quite some time ago. (I think the sequel is still on the first page. I haven't checked in a while, so probably not)

She uses a crutch to get around if her injury plays up again, but a walking stick if she feels her leg can support her for the distances she is going to walk that day. Alessa is one of my Pokémon OC, and she has a “ride Pokémon” in Arcanine if she needs to travel longer distances as she cannot handle that. She is not a Trainer, as she physically is not capable of keeping up with her peers in that regard.

I have a few characters with disabilities, a deaf, a mute, a blind and then one I'm not overly proud of anymore because he's really just that kind of butchered mentally unstable character we've seen a million times over. Even if I've tried to iron him out he's still gonna be a butchered character so I don't really use him much at all anymore.

Also have character's displaying a strong trait or traits usually associated with certain diagnoses, the character's themselves tho haven't been diagnosed with anything.

I'm tying to write about a character who once had a voice but after a traumatic accident lost her voice. It's harder than it looks since she's still a human with feelings and I don't want to be offensive to anyone who's like that.

In my work I work alongside Non-Verbal young perople and those with limited communication.
They mostly communicate through Sign, Objects of reference, picture cards, PECS, guiding the carer or pointing
