Are there any old sayings or proverbs that you're fond of? Is there a nugget of wisdom to be found in such things, or are they ridiculous and outdated nonsense that sound good when you say them but make very little sense in reality? Do your parents or grandparents like to throw them out there sometimes?
Wow, there are so many, especially the superstions~ I guess what I can remember is... Pee on your hands to remove pasma (sweaty palms) Knock on wood when thinking of something bad Don't sweep the floor at night Say tabi-tabi po (please move) when traversing/urinating on plants Don't go near mounds of soil and say sorry if you trip on one Say pwera usog (don't move?) when calling babies cute Hold your breath when passing through a cemetery and many more~
My family says "touch wood" a lot, which kinda means "hopefully the worst won't happen" or something like that. I... don't quite get it.
Oh, I know that one. A similar phrase is 'knock on wood'. It comes from back when people thought that fairies and other such spirits lived in trees. Touching or knocking on the wood would basically be asking for the fairy/spirit's blessing of luck and such.
My favorite phrase is, "You learn something new every day!" I mostly use this in conversations when I have run out of things to say or when somebody blows my mind. Rest assured, people around me will be tired of this phrase eventually.
