I’m going to assume you all have heard that has gotten over 13 million dislikes within the week it was unleashed to the public, beating out the previously most disliked video Baby by Justin Bieber. Do you think it was that bad? Yes I did think it was bad. Of course I do think some people disliked mostly because they just wanted to see the record broken (that’s me). There were just way too many references to things I don’t like, specifically Fortnite and the baby shark dance (that for whatever reason became so popular). Also I hardly recognized anyone, aside from some of the animators, Liza, and Marshmello. I guess it could have recapped the year better? No mention of infinity war, the deaths of Stefan Karl, Stan Lee, or Steven Hillenburg, not even t series vs pewdiepie. And other important/eventful things that happened in 2018 that I can’t think of. And don’t get me started on the “we should read the comments” part.
So glad someone dislike YouTube Rewind 2018 for most of the same reasons I did. You look at it, and all you can see is stuff that is kind of popular with the world, but not really good with the people of YT. You look at the comments, all there are, are the "good" ones, which isn't even what a quarter of YT comments are (I don't know how I know this). And while Fortnite was... okay, it wasn't so big that YT need to celebrate it the way it did, and Baby Shark was just... What? Why? So, I guess this is me ranting on why it was so bad. And I guess another reason would be, "We control Rewind this year." Like heck ya do. It's all the men in the suits. No one controls it but them. So don't let the illusion deceive you. You have no power, and that's the honest truth. But, I can't completely diss it. Nothing is without a good side, Rewind included. It showed some good people, and maybe a good side of the world, but that was all. Nothing special or important at all. Wait... Did I just say there was something good? Man, I'm good at lying to myself.
When I first looked at the thumbnail, the only person I recognised was, by no surprise, Ninja. The whole thing was just cringe-worthy overall, and there was little if any representation of YouTube 2018. No Shane Dawson, no Logan Paul, no KSI, no PewDiePie, no Jake Paul, no Johnny Johnny Yes Papa(I'm serious), no Infinity War, no Ugandan Knuckles. Literally nothing that happened this year, apart from Fortnite. Instead, they put in a YouTuber that hasn't uploaded in NINE MONTHS. Overall, it was just another disaster of a video.
They've missed out on so many of the big events. We all saw FChicken's Logan Paul jokes all over this place - a Pokémon site. It's spread all over the Internet, even to this place. If that's not enough to convince YouTube that it was a bigger event than Baby Please Get This Song Out Of The Darn Geometry Classroom Before I Throw A Desk Through The Window Shark, then I don't know what will. Although I'm not a Pewdiepie fan, and I know that he didn't really want to be in it either, leaving him out was a big mistake on YouTube's part. He represents the face of YouTube to some extent. He was a small-time Youtuber, a hotdog seller, who grew into a YouTube celebrity. A little dream becoming reality. It's also why people hate T-Series - they're just another company corporation. I also happened to recognize nobody at all, other than Odds1Out and, of course, JaidenAnimations. She really stole the entire show without meaning to, because I found her the best part out of all this other whatever. Major events were skipped. And let's be completely real: if YouTube can put in a monologue about people being hurt all over the world, they should at least throw in a few moments of remembrance for all the amazing people who sadly passed away this year. Stan Lee, Stefan Karl Stefansson (Robbie Rotten), heck, STEPHEN HAWKINGS didn't even get a mention! Meanwhile, they're off doing a video that's just 99% Fortnite, Bongo Cat, and really nothing much that viewers can be interested in... all while saying "You control Rewind!" If you claim to make everyone's voice be heard, actually listen to what people want!
I gotta say, with every Youtube Rewind it just feels like YT is getting more and more disconnected with their video creators. I feel like they've run out of ideas and went with the "let's go with what everyone wants to please" them but they still failed thinking that the MAJORITY of users love Fortnite to the point that I couldn't help but cringe. I also don't recognize most of the people in it but the animators definitely killed it. The Odds1Out is one of my favorite Youtubers and it was fun to see his work on there. Also, I'm kind of frustrated that they left out Pewdiepie this year again. I mean, how hard is it to put the guy with the highest number of subscribers into that video? Youtube spends millions of dollars making these rewinds and they can't even put Pewdiepie on it. I find it funny that the most disliked video on Youtube is the one that Youtube made themselves. (Also, KPop fan rant here, but I find it ridiculous that they decided to add KPop to the rewind and use footages similar to BTS' MV of Idol when they actually deleted views from the original music video.)
Apart from not including or referencing important events that occurred on and off the site during the year (Pewds VS T-Series, Shane Dawson's documentary on Jake Paul, Sefan Karl's death, just to name a few), the video was just cringeworthy in general. The worst part was by far the late night hosts doing Fortnite dances. That part made me physically wince. Also WAY too much Fortnite. I get it was a big cultural event, but jeezus it didn't need like 90% of the video dedicated to it. And like others have already said above, I recognised only about 7-8 of the YouTubers featured. The rest are literally nobodies to me. And why the hell was Will Smith in it? He barely even a YouTuber! And don't get me started on them including the late night hosts and Lele Pons (ugh). Overall the video was complete garbage, but at least we got a few funny memes out of it. Will Smith saying "That's hot", Casey Neistat yelling "KPop!", and edits of the battle bus scene.
I barely knew any of the ones they put in the rewind and to be honest I found it boring and it felt like they were trying way too hard. Why the Fortnite dance thingy? Sure it was a big thing but no need to make a rewind about it not everyone plays that game after all nor care about it. It was just no to the whole damn thing, this rewind was just so bad.
My favourite rewind is still 2013, every one after that has been subpar in my opinion. The thing that annoyed me the most was the ASMR section. Not because it was ASMR, I feel like it has a valid place in the rewind because it was a big part of youtube this year especially, but because the people in that section were not asmrtists??? Like why have a section on ASMR without having actual people who made it big on YT in the first place?? At that point it would have made more sense just not to have that section? Also the talking bit in the middle was so forced? I get what they were trying to do but it just felt cheap.
