I just thought this up, which is kinda embarrassing. As a self-certified Conspiracy Theorist, I should have dissected every loose end in S/M. In my defense, I was caught up in the BADASS storyline.
So, here we go. Who are Hau's parents? Hala is his grandpa, but just like Blue Oak, we don't actually know who Hau's parents are.
I cannot believe I just compared Blue to Hau...
    Possible Theories
-They are minor characters in S/M
    -They are traveling*
-One or both died in the Kanto War
-Hau is related to some protagonist in earlier games
*Hau's father couldn't handle growing up in the shadow of the kahuna, so he left.

Anybody know anything more? I'd love to hear any ideas!

We don't got a dad, maybe dad's just stopped existing!

For real though, I think he is staying with his grandpa, for the time being, kinda just staying in Alola during summer or something.g

I'm not sure why, but I like the war theory.

He looks like he's lived there locally for quite some time now, if not his whole life, so I'm going to say that for me the best fitting theory is the Kanto War theory, it explains the prevalence of women in workplaces (Jennies and Joys), it explains lack of father figures for more than one character and it explains what context there is for Lt. Surge being an army dude (clearly, there's an army and they've "seen some tough things in their time" haha). We also know that there is a migratory history with Kanto which is obvious from both the Pokémon forms and the intro where you as the player migrate, so it's entirely possible his father wanted to see Kanto's Pokémon and thus ended up in the Kanto war whilst traveling there, but not before making sure he left his son safely on the islands.(that is if he ever took his son with him there at all).

I suppose the one part of the war theory that I can't figure out is where exactly a battle like that would have occured, the towns of Kanto don't seem to show evidence of destruction/rebuilding and a war with Pokémon in it would surely have left a pretty obvious mark on the landscape.

edit: just realized, if you want to really overthink it, Lavender Town might be some evidence of this destructive impact, because we only spend hundreds of episodes watching Pokémon get beaten to pulps in every way imaginable, but you almost never see one actually die. BUT, there is obviously a substantial number of Pokémon graves in Lavender Town, therefore indicating Pokémon died in the war as a result of something even more full on than battles typically show. Humans may have done some pretty full on things to end that war and thus actually manage to kill Pokémon in significant numbers.

Still don't know about battle site/ability to rebuild. Maybe all the towns used to be as developed as Celadon with tall buildings etc, and the reason so many have so few and such small buildings now is that they didnt rebuild as big?

Personally, I'm a fan of the Kanto War theory too. I actually have an idea on why Red's dad doesn't show up, but that's for another time. I've always wondered why Red doesn't show any fear. Defeating Team Rocket? No problem. Running around in a world of thugs and criminals? Easy. I began thinking that Red either had some traumatic scarring incident in his past, or is doing his journey for someone, and that's why he won't back down. Who knows, maybe the war happened not too long ago, and that's why Red (maybe) has some memory of his father.
After a completely unrelated mini-rant, onto Hau. I really hope his parents aren't minor characters, because they are some really crappy parents if they just abandoned their child like that. I kinda like thinking Hau is related to someone from D/P/P. I don't know why, but the idea just came and now I can't stop thinking about it. But my favorite is Kanto War. It really explains a lot of loose ends in R/B/G/Y...but adds a whole lot more.

This in an excellent point. The landscape shows little signs of battle. If I was to put a really crazy theory out there (aka act like I always do) I'd say AZ was involved. His war was three thousand years ago-right? Dun-dun-dun! No. Impossible.

I think the Kanto War seems the most logical, the act that we don't know who they are or what they look like doesn't help either. All of these theories are really good, but the Kanto War seems pretty logical.
And as it was said earlier about Lavender Town, there are a pretty fair amount of Pokémon graves there. And maybe that's why so many people are scared to go there. And it might also be why it scares people with their music, either people get scared or they had a really bad composer. But either way, Lavender Town would almost be the perfect location for a War

Even though there are good points, I don't quite agree with the Kanto war theory, but I just don't like theories in general. Maybe Hau does have parents in another town/building/area and are just not shown in the game. It's great how we think many different possibilities, but when it comes to Pokémon, I don't enjoy overthinking ideas all the time. Hau seems like a wonderful and happy person, and it is quite evident that he has been brought up well. He doesn't seem like the kind of person who would be hiding secrets or whatnot. Even if his parents abandoned him or have passed away, he seems like he was raised in a good way.

I wonder if we'll see Hay's parents in USUM? It is an alternate plot, after all! Maybe one of Hau's parents has taken up the job of being the kahuna after Hala passes away or something like that.

That would make a lot of sense. Maybe the Kanto War never happened in this version, and Hau's parents are still in Alola. It would be interesting to see how they are different and similar to Hau.

I heard a theory somewhere that Bruno is Hau's father. They look kind of similar and Hau's father is supposed to be a powerful trainer...

If Pokémon gives us more cameos in USUM, then there is a very real possibility that Bruno could show up. Maybe Hau would have a total 'Hey. I know you.' moment, and I think that would be adorable and amazing.
All we know is that he works far away from Alola, so it could be very possible.

I just assumed some of the minor NPCs in Hala's house were supposed to be Hau's family. The only hard evidence of their having been a war in living memory of the characters in the Pokémon series that I've ever noticed is Lt. Surge talking about being in one, but I always assumed that was just the Pokémon equivalent of the Vietnam War, not one fought in any of the regions shown so far.
