    Posting on the forums

Posting is the main way to communicate with your fellow Lake Valor members. Find an interesting topic you'd love to discuss with the rest of the community? Then go ahead and post!

    How to make a Post:

At the very bottom of a discussion thread you'll see a box where you can type your response and get chatting.

Please make sure to follow the forum rules and read the opening post of the thread you're replying to before posting yourself, however. The purpose of a forum is to talk with other people, and it defeats the point if you come into a thread without making an effort to read and reply to others.

    How to make a Thread:

At the top right of an individual forum you'll see a button labeled 'Post New Thread.' From there you can choose a thread prefix (if applicable, such as 'Gen 1' for Gen I-related threads and so on). Remember to post your thread in the forum where it fits best — if you want to talk about the Sun & Moon starters, you'd post in the Sun & Moon forum, for example.

Feel free to contact a staff member if you're unsure where to post.

Formatting your posts / Inserting Images, Links, and Videos:

If you want to format your posts (such as bolding, centering, adding color, resizing, etc) or add an image/link/video, simply click on the appropriate icon in the reply box. Make sure you select the text you want to make changes to before attempting to apply formatting. YouTube Videos can be posted simply by copy/pasting the link.

You can also hover over each formatting icon for an explanation if you're unsure of what it does.

    Replying to others:

If you need to respond to a specific post in a thread, there are two great ways to go about this: Mentioning or Quoting.

Mentioning: To mention another user in your post, just type the following text:

    @INSERTUSERNAME

Just replace INSERTUSERNAME with the user's actual username and select the user in question once the dropdown of all users with similar names pops up. Their username will appear in your post as it does on the forums, and the user will receive a notification that you mentioned them. You can mention multiple usernames if you're responding to multiple people.

Quoting: To quote what someone said, just click the Reply button at the bottom right of their post. You'll then automatically be directed to the reply box, where you can respond to the user's post.

MultiQuoting: MultiQuoting is used to respond to multiple posts by quoting all of them in the same post. To do this, click '+ Quote' in the bottom right of each user's posts you want to quote. Then scroll down to the bottom of the thread and press 'Insert Quotes' to add them all to your reply box. From there, respond away!

    Receiving and customizing Alerts

If someone mentions, quotes, likes, comments on your profile/status message, or sends you a private conversation, you'll receive an alert in your notifications stash located at the top right corner of any page on the forum. Next to your username you'll see icons of an envelope, flag, and portrait — these will allow you to look at your private messages, forum alerts (such as quotes, likes, etc), and edit your forum background respectively.

To change your Alert Preferences, simply hover over your username in your member menu at the top right and click 'Alert Preferences.' From here, you can change what alerts you'll be notified for.

When you're done, be sure to click 'Save Changes' at the bottom!

tip! If you're particularly interested in a specific discussion, you have the ability to add it to your alerts list to be notified each time someone makes a new reply. To do so, go into the thread and click 'Watch Thread' at the top right of the opening post.

    Settings and Preferences
The Settings & Preferences section is the place where you'll be able to edit your forum information, such as your user options, profile, avatar, and signature among others. To find it, first hover over your username at the top of the page to bring up a menu where specific things can be edited. What you click on depends on what you're looking to change.

    Personal Details:

As the name implies, this is your personal forum information, such as your status message, avatar, custom title, gender, birthday, privacy settings, and other interests and things about yourself you can fill out. This is also where you can create and edit your About Me page to let the rest of the community know more about you as a person!

    Preferences:

If you'd like to make changes to your general forum settings, such as hiding member signatures or your online status, this is the place.

    Alert Preferences:

Make changes to your alert notifications here.

    Avatar:

Your Avatar is the image that displays next to each of your posts and on your profile. This will be the image to represent you. You may change it in this menu. If it is too large, it will automatically be scaled down to fit.

Remember to hit 'Okay' once you've made changes!

    Signature:

Your signature is the space that appears below each of your posts. You can put images, text, and links here. Feel free to customize it as you see fit, so long as they fit within the forum rules and our signature guidelines. Make sure to check the signature rules before making any changes!

    Your News Feed:

If you're a curious cat, here is where you can see activity by members you've followed, such as what threads they've recently posted in, what posts they liked, and any changes made to their status message.

The remaining menus are self-explanatory, but here is a quick rundown of the general options you can view in the control panel dropdown when hovering over your username -
    • Password: Change your password
    • Likes You've Received: All of your received likes
    • Your Content: Threads/posts you've made
The remaining menus are located in your main Account pane and are also self-explanatory.

That about sums it up. Browse through your settings & preferences when you can, as there are a lot of things you can edit to make your Lake Valor experience smoother and to your liking!

    Private Conversations
Like most forums, you can send a Private Conversation (often referred to as Private Message, or PM) to another user. As the name implies, this message is confidential and can only be viewed by you and the recipient you're sending it to (and anyone else who may be invited to view the conversation).

    Viewing Private Conversations:

When you receive a new private conversation, it will appear as an alert in the envelope icon within your user menu, located in the top right corner of every page. From this menu, you can view all of your recent private message conversations or start a brand new one.

    Sending Private Conversations:

To send a private message, click the envelope to make the PM drop down menu appear, and click 'Start a Conversation.'

You'll be taken to a page where you can write the user you'd like it sent to, give the conversation a title, and, of course, write out the message itself.

Alternatively, if you don't want to fill out the username field yourself, you can send a private conversation to someone by going to their profile, clicking 'Information,' and then 'Start a Conversation.'

    Private Conversation actions:

While viewing a private conversation, there are several actions you can also perform -
    • Upload a File. If you want to include an attachment that's relevant to your message, feel free to do so here.
    • Preview. Look at a preview of your message before you send it.
    • Allow anyone in the conversation to invite others. If you'd like to grand the recipient(s) permission to invite other members to the private conversation, tick this box.
    • Lock conversation. This will block the recipient(s) from being able to respond.
    Show All Conversations actions:

By clicking 'Show All' in the envelope drop down menu or 'Conversations' when viewing a single private conversation, you’ll be taken to the general conversations page where you can see all of your private conversations history.

From here you can select and (permanently) delete specific conversations.

By using the 'Conversation Display Options' menu at the bottom, you can also filter conversations by sender, receiver, and participants by username.

tip! Don't forget that you can you can also report private conversation messages if they're breaching any rules. Just because it is private, does not mean the staff does not have the ability to see it when needed. If you feel someone is breaking the rules or insulting you in any way, don't hesitate to report it so the staff can take a look.

    Interactive Features
Lake Valor has many ways that you can interact with your fellow members. Here are just a few of the things you can do for that.
Keep in mind, a lot of these features also use the Alert Preferences and Privacy features in the User CP, so make sure you have the appropriate alert box ticked!

    Status Updates
Similar to social media sites, Lake Valor gives you your own personal 'wall' that you can post status updates on. You can update your status by using the "Recent Status Updates" box on the forum index, or go to your profile and update it that way. Look for the box that says "Update your status..." and type it in.
Your status update will appear on the forum index, as well as on your profile's wall. The index will only show the 5 most recent updates, but your wall will preserve them forever.
You can also post a message on someone else's wall, be it a greeting, a message, or even a funny joke. You can receive notifications when people reply to your updates and comments, or when people reply to updates you've replied to.

    Discord Server
Lake Valor also has its very own Discord server, which you can go to at any time to chat with your fellow members! Discord has the advantage of being able to talk to people in real time, so if live chats are your sort of thing, feel free to stop by the server. You can join the Discord by clicking on the "Chatroom" link at the very top of the page.
In order to access LV's Discord, you must first be verified. To do so, you must link your forum account with your Discord account. You can do so by using the External Accounts page. This will link your forum account with your Discord account, and verify you automatically. If you're a donator, you will have that rank/colour on the Discord server as well.

You can also de-link your Discord and forum accounts at any time.

    Customising Forum Appearance
Lake Valor comes with a few nifty features that can help customise how the forum appears to you, to give you a personalised experience. Here are a few things you can do.

    Show/Hide Forum Sections
On the forum index, you'll see a lot of large categories, like Site, Pokémon Center, and so on. You can decide which ones appear by pressing the "-" on the name bar to hide it. Pressing the "+" while it's hidden causes it to appear again.

    Watching Threads and Sections
If there's a thread or section you really want to follow, you can set it up so that you're notified whenever there's a new reply or topic.
When viewing a thread, there's a "Watch Thread" link at the top right of the thread (right below the title); clicking that button will let you watch the thread. Every time someone replies to that thread, you will get a notification.
When viewing a section, there's a "Watch Forum" link, also at the top right (right above the stickied threads); clicking that will let you watch the forum. Every time someone posts a new topic in that section, you will get a notification.

You can change how you get notifications in your profile, under Alert Preferences. Make sure the 'Replies to a watched thread' box is checked!

    Forum Themes
Lake Valor comes with a variety of 'themes', which are essentially skins that change the appearance (but not function) of the forum. There are a few available to choose from, based on what you find most aesthetically pleasing.
To select what theme you're using, scroll down to the bottom left of the page; right above the Quick Navigation, you will see a dropdown where you can choose what theme you're currently viewing. You can change the theme at any time, so feel free to pick whichever theme you like best.

    Forum Rules & Enforcement
Like any community, Lake Valor has its own set of rules that everyone has to abide by. The Global Forum Rules can be found in the Info Hub, or via the "Global Forum Rules" link at the bottom of every page. Certain forum sections may also have rules specific to them, which will also be found as stickied threads.

Note that the Global Forum Rules apply everywhere, on both Lake Valor's forum and Discord server alike. If you break the rules on one, you risk being barred from both. Don't worry, though - we want Lake Valor to be a safe, clean, and fun place, so as long as you're considerate and mean well, you shouldn't have much trouble.

The Moderators and Administrators are the ones who enforce the rules across Lake Valor (forums and Discord server). The Discord Mods do so as well, though just on the Discord server.

If a member ends up breaking a rule, one of three possible offenses will be given: verbal warning, warning point, or ban.

A verbal warning is the simplest form of offense. This is usually given when a member breaks a rule on accident, and is usually given for first offenses or something similarly minor.
If this happens to you, a Moderator or Administrator will PM you and explain what the broken rule was, what he or she did to rectify the situation, and how to avoid breaking the rule in the future.
Verbal warnings are generally given if a member can be given the benefit of the doubt, and do not have a significant effect.

A warning point is given when the offense committed is more serious, or when a member has been given multiple verbal warnings and the penalty needs to escalate one step.
If this happens, a Moderator or Administrator will PM you, explaining everything as above, but will also place a warning point on your account.
Warning points appear on your record, and will have a set expiration date, which depends on the severity of the offense (lighter ones will expire sooner, but more serious ones stay longer). Points from repeat offenses may also have a higher duration.
You can check how many warning points you have on your profile. Warning points are known only to you and the staff.

A ban is when the offense is serious enough (or when multiple warning points have been given) that a member must be banned from Lake Valor.
Only Administrators handle bans, and only if a ban is really deserved. When a member is banned, he or she cannot access Lake Valor's forum or Discord server at all.
Bans can be either temporary or permanent, depending on the offense. For example, if a ban was given because of multiple warning points, it will most likely be temporary, but bans given for more serious offenses will tend to be permanent.

What if you spot something you think breaks the rules?
Let one of the staff know about it. On the forums, there is a "Report" button at the bottom of every post; if you think that post breaks a rule, simply report it and the staff will take care of it.
If it happens to be on the Discord server, you can let one of the staff know directly. Either way, once you let the staff know, they will handle it.

Do not berate any member or otherwise try to 'play police' yourself with the rules. This is called 'backseat moderating', which is also against the rules.
If you must let a member know, be gentle about it, and report it anyway just in case. Remember, it is the staff's job to enforce the rules, and they can handle it.

    Lake Valor Staff
The staff on Lake Valor are the users who dedicate their time to help take care of the forums and host many events that help keep the site active and fun. They are often the best people to contact if you have questions about the site or run into trouble with other users.

Having a staff position is not a right, it is earned. If you wish to become a member of staff, you must be a first-rate member of the forums and display impeccable behavior. An administrator may then decide to approach you. There also may be staff applications from time to time if we need more staff, you can always apply to these if you want to help out.

Generally, to become a Moderator, the following qualities are looked for in potential candidates:
    • Positivity and Stability - handles negative situations in a calm and respectful way, and always keeps a friendly demeanor
    • Activity and Dedication - visits the forums regularly and shows consistency with participating in the site
    • Demonstrates Knowledge of the Rules - always follows the rules and reports others who don't
    • Organized and Creative - has insightful ideas, individual opinions, and presents their thoughts in a clear and orderly fashion
Please know that even if you follow all these mini-guidelines, you still may not be asked. Lake Valor is very careful about selecting users to promote to staff, and these things take time anyway - new members of staff are not always even needed. Just remember - the most important quality for a staff member is that you truly care about the site and making it a better place.

    Administrators:

Administrators run the forums on a deeper and technical level. They watch over the entire website as a whole, and conduct significant tasks such as promoting staff, changing forums around, and even looking into bugs that may appear on the site. They appear on the forums with glowing Cyan usernames, with a Master Ball icon.

    Super Moderators:

Super Moderators do everything that normal mods do, but they do this for the entire forum. They are also capable of doing other stuff to help out members that moderators cannot do. Super Moderators have Blue usernames, with an Ultra Ball icon in front of it. If there are any problems that the moderators cannot help you with, please alert a Super Moderator.

    Moderators:

A Moderator's job is to help clean up and watch over specific forums. Moderators have Green usernames, with a Great Ball icon in front of it. If you have questions about a certain section of the forums, it's a good idea to contact the moderator specific to that section. You can see who moderates a forum by clicking it and looking at the top under the header of that forum.

You can look at the complete list of Forum Staff Members here.

    Discord Moderators:

Discord Moderators keep the peace in the Lake Valor Discord server. Discord Moderators have a Lilac username, with a Dive Ball icon. If you have any questions or feel uncomfortable on the Discord Server, you can contact a Discord Moderator about it. They have the same powers on Discord as normal Moderators, so please follow their instructions.

    Other Username glows:

If you see a user with a different color than normal, but the color is not listed above, it means they are not part of staff (Staff colors override all other colors; don't believe people claiming to be staff if they do not have the right color). Here is a quick guide to what other username colors mean:

Purple Usernames mean this user has donated between $5 and $19 to Lake Valor and has earned the title VIP.

Red Usernames mean this user has donated between $20 - $49 to Lake Valor and has earned the title Contributor.

Animated Pink Usernames mean the user has donated $50 - $99 to Lake Valor and has earned the title Supporter.

Animated Gold Usernames mean that this user has donated $100 or more to Lake Valor and has earned the title Patron.

(to donate to Lake Valor, please visit this page. All proceeds go toward improving the site.)

Orange colored Usernames mean that this user is part of Lake Valor's Social Team. If you are interested in helping manage LV's social media's outlets, fill out an application form.

    PokéPoints & our Market
Here on Lake Valor, we have our own economy with a currency known as PokéPoints or PP for short.

    Earning PokéPoints:

There are plenty of ways to earn PokéPoints:
    • Posting - Just post on the forum and you gain PP for every post you make
    • Events/Contests - You can participate in events that are held on Lake Valor and get PokéPoints for participating. Winners get even more PokéPoints.
    • The Market - You can set up a shop for various things: Selling signatures, other artwork, or even Pokémon.
    • Redeeming Promotional Codes
More information about the Market and how to redeem promotional codes is further down in this post.

    Spending PokéPoints:

There are two primary ways to spend your PokéPoints: the LV Shop and the Market.

    LV Shop:

Visit the LV Shop here. In the LV Shop, you can buy various things:
    • PokéBalls: This is where you can buy the PokéBalls, Great Balls, and Ultra Balls to catch the Pokémon that roam about on the forum.
    • Treasures: Each month new Pokémon related treasures are added to the shop. A full list of treasures can be found here.
    • User Changes: Here you can buy: Custom Usertitle, Username Change, Profile Music Player, and a custom Post Style.
Note: You can trade Treasures for PokéPoints and other things here, if you don't want them anymore.

    Displaying Treasures

You can set Treasures by going to the Your Inventory tab in the LV Shop. You will see a list of the Treasures you have collected. On the right side of the screen, you will see the Settings button.

If you want to display a Treasure, tick on the Active box, and untick the Hidden Box. Like shown in the picture down below.

Save and your adoptable should show up in the postbit underneath your Avatar in posts.

    The Market:

There is a section on LV called the Market (click here to go straight there). Here, users can set up their very own shops, where they can sell things such as art or Pokémon. This is a great way to earn some PokéPoints if you have something to offer or a useful place to buy things with the PokéPoints you've collected, such as neat graphics to put in your signature.

Note: If you buy a product from someone, be sure to pay them the appropriate amount of PokéPoints! To pay them, go to the post bit on the left of the page and click on PokéPoint sign. A new window will pop up and asks if you want to donate to that user. Fill in the amount of PokéPoints that you owe the user and click on save. You must also be sure to leave Feedback.

For more information on the Market, click here.

    Redeeming Promotion Codes

On several occasions, you can find a Promotional Code in announcements or in our social media posts that you can redeem here on Lake Valor. How does this work?

First, you need to have a code that you can redeem. Say, LAKEVALORPROMO (Is not a real code).

Then you need to go to your post bit and click on your PokéPoint sign.

A new window pops up with a few tabs. Click on the tab that says "Redeem".

Type your code in the text box, as show in the picture. Then click on the save button.

If you have done the steps correctly, you should receive your PP.

    Misc Tips & Tidbits
Here are some other useful bits and bobs about Lake Valor. These are other various things and features that are found here, that don't really fit into a previous category but are still useful.

    Likes
If you see a post on the forum or on someone's profile that you enjoyed, you can thank that person by giving him or her a 'Like'. Likes are given by members to other members as a show of appreciation.
To give a Like, go to the bottom right of the post or comment, and click the 'Like' button. You can see how many likes you or someone else has received by visiting his or her profile, or by viewing the postbit on the side of any member's post.

    Trophies
You can earn trophies by passing various milestones while you're on Lake Valor, such as having a specific amount of posts, buying enough items in the LV Shop, or even participating in a contest.
Some trophies are awarded automatically to you when you pass those points; others must be requested to obtain them. You can find a full list of Trophies here.
If there are any trophies you have earned and want to request them, make a post in this thread saying what Trophies you've earned.

    Linking to a Specific Post
If you want to link to a specific post in a thread (rather than the entire thread), there's an easy way to do that. At the bottom-right of each post, there is a number (#) showing what number post it is in the thread, e.g. #11. That number has the link to that post, so you can copy that link to refer back to that post easily. This is very handy if you need to direct someone to a specific post in a thread. For example, the link for this specific post would be "https://lakevalor.net/threads/new-to-lv-or-confused-read-this.17770/#post-375726".

    User Ranks
On Lake Valor, each member has a user title/rank underneath your avatar in posts, on your profile and various other places too. For example, like this:

    [IMG] or [IMG]

As you can see, the user title of the members here are "Fateful Princess" or "Wimpod Hugger".

This user has a custom user title which they inputted themselves. Here is a list of groups which can have a custom user title:
    • Administrators
    • Moderators
    • Discord Mod
    • Social Team
    • Patron
    • Supporter
    • Contributors
    • VIP
Regular users that aren't those groups above or haven't bought a custom user title change will get new user titles/ranks by posting. Once you reach a certain posting milestone your user title will change to a Trainer Class which can be found in the latest Pokémon games. Here is a list of ranks, and how many posts you need to reach it.
    • Youngster - 0 posts
    • Bug Catcher - 10 posts
    • School Kid - 20 posts
    • Camper - 30 posts
    • Tuber - 40 posts
