As the performers filed in the auditorium, a harp playing a majestic melody floated over the excited chatter. Brock was before the beautiful instrument, playing a lighthearted melody that evoked a waterfall. He often played the harp to pass the time as the performers filed in, allowing them to relax and settle in. He would also play if an unexpected delay occurred in a show. Veteran performers often said that "If the harp starts playing in the middle of a show, something's wrong."

There were still plenty of people coming in, so Brock started another song. This one he remembered hearing his mother Lola play on the piano often, as well as his siblings learning through their own piano lessons. After borrowing a copy of the piano sheet music, he had taught himself to play it on harp. Unlike all those piano performances through the years, he preferred to play a slightly faster version--not to show off, but limber his fingers. If asked, he could play it at the piano version's tempo too.

Once sure everyone was present, Brock acknowledged his applause, then got up from the harp to address the crowd. "Thank you. Your first show is an adaption of one of the longer and most well known of the Tales of Kanade, 'The Quest for the Dragon Bow'.

Excited whispers wafted through the auditorium. Most anyone knew about the warrior-miko Kanade from folklore, and the stories of her adventures had been told, published and adapted for the stage, radio, TV and even video games many a time.

An epic myth about a heroic priestess. Her tale involves a lost artifact, a bow, a great journey, a mighty feat, dragons and a great victory.

Brock looked around the room. "Is there anyone not familiar with the Tales of Kanade?"

Every once in a while, someone would come that was unfamiliar with the tale cycle, so if any hands were raised, Brock would give them a very brief overview, and touch on the best known adaptions of stories from the cycle.

Luckily, that was not the case this year.

"All right, the basic plot of the show goes like this..." Brock began. "In a certain village in the land where the Tales take place, it is a tradition for all boys and girls who are of age to participate in an archery contest. The winner gets a very special bow named the Dragon Bow."

(The company specializes in adventurous stories, actually)

"But on the year our story takes place, the Dragon Bow is stolen." Brock intones. "On top of that, the elder's daughter is kidnapped. Believing the two events to be connected, a boy of the village decides to go to the temple, and ask Kanade for advice on what to do next."

"Kanade is troubled by the boy's stories, and offers to come with him on his quest." Brock went on. "It turns out that the elder's daughter was kidnapped by a Hydreigon, and that the Dragon Bow was shattered into eight gems of virtue. The only way to save her is reassemble the Dragon Bow, and use it to kill the Hydreigon."

"In the end, the boy and the elder's daughter marry, with Kanade officiating the ceremony." Brock concludes. "There will be plenty of opportunities for our feats of skill--anyone with combat skill, aerial skill, sleight of hand, musical skill or puppeteering will find a role in this show."

(As for the roles the four main heroes play, Ash is playing the hero, Misty is playing Undine, the spirit of water, Brock is narrating and Serena is playing Kitsune. Dawn is playing Kanade--how would Sophie react if she got the role of the elder's daughter?)

Before long, the info session was over, and the audition rooms were officially open. While Ash, Misty, Brock, and Serena were skilled performers, they had to go through the same process as everyone else.
