What are some types that you never understood why a Pokémon has?

1- Gyarados and Flying type. I understand why it wasn’t a Dragon type because Water-Dragon would have been an overpowered type combination in gen 1. But why couldn’t they change its typing in future gens, like Magnemite? And why is Mega Gyarados part Dark type? It seems like a missed opportunity to not have it be a Dragon type.

2- Mawile and Fairy type. It’s classified in the Pokédex as the “Deceiver Pokémon”, which implies it is evil. And as you may know, Dark type is known as “Evil type” in Japanese. It can learn 17 Dark type moves, while it can only learn 3 Fairy moves. It’s also based on a yōkai called the Futakuchi-onna. (You can read some stories about it online, but many stories depict it as deceitful or vengeful.)

2- Granbull and Fairy type. (and Snubbull too) It’s classified in the Pokédex as the “Fairy Pokémon”, but as we already discussed with Mawile, this classification means nothing about its typing. It is far from being even remotely cute, and it learns a grand total of 3 Fairy moves, one of them being ironically Charm. I think it should’ve stayed a Normal type.

Well, currently, I'm a little salty about the fact that Corviknight is Goth Skarmory Steel/Flying instead of either Steel/Dark or Dark/Flying, what with the whole raven aesthetic going on, but hey.

On a serious note, a lot of the times, I don't really get Normal combos. Like, take Jigglypuff, for example. Clefairy got converted into a full-on Fairy, so why is Jigglypuff Normal/Fairy? Just for the STAB it gets on sound moves? And what about all the Flying-types? Why do Pidgey, Spearow, Hoothoot, Taillow, etc., etc. have to be Normal/Flying instead of just pure Flying? (And speaking of, why is Fletchling Normal/Flying instead of Fire/Flying like its evolutions? And speaking of Kalos Pokémon that are randomly also Normal, what's up with the Litleo line's half-Normal typing? Or Helioptile's? Just like ... wtf is with Normal, period?)

Also, the biggest one for me: Gligar. You have no idea how many times younger me kept forgetting it's Ground/Flying and not Poison/Flying. To this day, I have to think for a second whenever facing either it or its evolution, purely because it is literally the lovechild of a scorpion and a sugar-glider. Its pokédex entries mention its venomous stinger. What do you mean it's not a Poison-type?? How is it a Ground-type????

The biggest one for me is Volcanion and Fire/Water.

    What??

I get that Volcanion is based off of the concept of steam and all, but still. It makes the least sense to me but makes for very interesting competitive play.

    @Minty Electric
From what I have read normal type is used in place of an animal/beast type for the majority of concepting. Though I agree the should just move away from the normal birds at this point if only for the sake of variety. And this is coming from an avid fan of Normal Type Pokémon.

Gliscor and Gligar I agree with though, I have sent so many psychic attacks there way hoping for quicker KOs and forgetting about the ground typing.

Another one that gets me often is the Anorith line, I know it is silly but when I was a kid I was convinced they were Rock/Water type and that kinda sticks with me to this day where I hesitate in battle before remembering it's typing.

beedrill: why the heck is this thing not electric/dark its clearly black and yellow im going to gamefreak and im going to release a million bees into the building

i cant think of any others right now but im here to explain away everything you've said and probably anything anybody else is gonna say
1 - Gyarados. First point I'm gonna shoot down is the whole updating from a past gen thing. Perhaps they were trying to be minimal at the time (if not still now: I cant think of many examples) on changing old mons types. Magnemite (and the massive Gen 6 Fairy Flood™) was a sort of special case. It wasnt entirely a rework of the type to make more sense: It was an addition of the new typing. As for Mega Gyara...idk. big and scary.

2 - Mawile. Now then, the question is, does it lean more towards evil...or mischevious? Is its deception more of a prank (possibly overly cruel prank but prank nonetheless) or outright evil? And if you think some things might be too cruel for a prank...oh boy. Here comes the fairy ready to...kidnap orphans or something idk I dont know that much about fairies in mythology. All I know is that they take their "pranks" way too far sometimes. If not some being evil. As for the lack of fairy moves, might be able to blame the fact that fairy movepool is shallow. ESPECIALLY on the physical side.

2 again haha you made a mistake entire post is ruined haha xd - "It is far from being even remotely cute," ding ding even the Pokédex says your opinion is wrong Snubbull Pokédex Entry (taken straight out of this here book I have with me: "...It attempts to drive off would-be opponents with a growl--But many people find this adorable." Alongside the Granbull entry in this here book: "...Granbull looks like a fierce opponent--but its a total sweetheart, a timid Pokémon who bites only when provoked. This amusing contrast has made it popular among young people." As for movepool, again, see mawiles excuse.
Corviknight: Not necessarily dark or evil. I'd say steel defines it better then dark: Its big knight raven. Knight Night.

And now its time for everyones favorite game,
    "Screw you normal type!"
Jigglypuff: Normal is like a placeholder Sound Type. Its also just a balloon. Woo.
Flying Gang: They're all just...birds. Normal birds. Also, Fletchling isnt firey enough to deserve the typing yet. Screw you Fletchling.
Litleo: Its just a lion with fire powers and minor fire aesthetic. Not much special.
Heliolisk: Like Litleo reasoning, but electric lizard this time. And also more into its other typing this time but I dont know. This is probably my weakest excuse in the norm of the north gang
some of these reasonings are weak but tbh so is normals reasoning for existing ha HAAAAA--

Gligar Line: no im gonna be real i got nothing. its habitat doesnt really fit (cliffs and trees and whatever or something like that), its got no real excuse to be ground. both bug and poison fit better (mostly poison) and yet its ground. i consider myself defeated with this one.
its. its steam. I honestly dont know what else to say. Its fire/water because its the steam Pokémon. simple.
anorith may swim but its also a bug. and you gotta hsve that rock type on the fossil mon. it was bug vs water and bug (fairly deservedly) won

I've always been a bit thrown off by Lucario's steel/fighting typing. Fighting I get, but steel? Why? Because of his pokey things on his arms? I guess that makes sense, if it weren't for the fact that Lucario's aura powers are incredibly psychic like. Why isn't he a psychic/fighting Pokémon?

I've also never really understood the Gastly line being half poison. What was even the point of doing that? The only thing that accomplishes is makes the single type advantage over psychic in the first generation completely pointless because it's also a typing that is incredibly weak to psychic, making the psychic typing way too overpowered.

Just a few. Good luck Kraken.

Why the heck is base form Hoopa part Ghost? Psychic I get, because duh. But I think the dark from Unbound would fit better. It's not as evil as its Unbound form though, so maybe Fairy, for the mischievous Mawile reason? I just can't think of why it's Ghost.

Why is Palkia Water, and Dialga Steel? Aside from purely aesthetic reasons, I see no logical explanation. Dragon makes sense, because of the whole draconic magic thing, and literally being dragons, but since when has Palkia had any connection to the ocean? Even Lugia has clear connections to the sea, and it isn't even Water type! I understand that part though. The Palkia thing I just don't get, and to a lesser extent, Dialga faces the same issue.

Why is Celebi not Fairy type again? It loves nature, sure, and time travels, so I would say Grass and Psychic are the next best choices, but really? It's the freaking Pixie Pokémon! With all the cute naivety in the world and it just screams, MAKE ME A FAIRY! This one at least has two types that both make sense, I just think Fairy makes more sense.

Why are Lileep and Cradily Grass type? Rock works from the fossils, but I think Water or Poison would be a better fit. This one is more of a nitpick though.

Dhelmise would make more sense as a steel/ghost type. I know there’s algae all over it, but it’s still a haunted anchor.

I've personally never understood both Suicune's water typing or Whimsicott's fairy type.

Suicune learns a plethora of ice type moves, so why not add in the ice typing? I get that it's supposed to be like 'the northern wind', but even then, ice would've fit it. At the end of the day, I guess it really only makes sense because of its ability to purify water.

Then there's the Whimsicott line. I understand the grass type, clearly, but why the fairy type? Even adding the flying type instead would've made more sense since it's mentioned in most dex entries that it rides whirlwinds. I dunno. Heck fairy types.

I think it’s not steel type because the Pokémon itself is just haunted seaweed, and it just happened to grow on an anchor.

Lugia should have been Psychic/Water, is the ruler of seas, why is is flying?

Flygon should have been Bug/Dragon, it just screams dragonfly to me with its whole design.

They could have "fixed" Gyarados' typing but instead kept it as Water/Flying which makes no sense at all. They could have made its mega part dragon but they for some weird reason went with dark.

If I'm remembering correctly, most of the Pokémon that were changed to Fairy were either Normal-type, or only had one type to begin with. I think that's why they left it, or maybe it just slipped their mind when they were adding Fairy to old Pokémon.I do agree that it should be Fairy, though.

    It's gamer time.

Lucario: Sure, psychic might work, though nothing about its appearance gives away that type. I guess fighting/steel is better then pure fighting, and it works well enough with the pokey bits I suppose.

Gastly: A lot of its Pokédex entries keep mentioning its made of some kind of gas, but specifically Pearl (and probably other entires) go a bit like this: "A Pokémon born from poison gases. It defeats even the largest foes by enveloping them in gas." Poison. Gases.

Hoopa Confined: Hoopa Unbound is known as the Djinn Pokémon, one of the things tipping me off to the fact its a genie-based Pokémon in some ways. By extension, that makes the less evil Hoopa Confined more of a ghost, which is the closest thing to a "genie" type. That, and it does have a fairly big ghost energy.

Palkia: While I'm not going to comment on Dialga, the one that has LITERAL STEEL ARMOR THINGIES ON IT, however Palkia being water is an interesting one. I'd say Water is actually one of the closest things to representing a "space" type well. Not only in the whole gravity nonsense or whatever (i dont know what im even talking about anymore), but also the fact its the middle of the 3 states of matter or whatever. Matter of fact (HAAAA--), doesn't Dialga fit solid decently well, and Giratina gas...?

Celebi: Time Travel is a psychic enough thing, but one thing I do want to note: It came before Fairy Type. Sure, it could've obtained the type in Gen 6 maybe...if it wasn't, y'know, a mythical. Don't think they'd change the type of that. I dunno.

Lilyeet: If it looks like a plant, seems like a plant, but technically isn't a plant...close enough to a plant. Even the thing its based on is called a "Sea Lillie" despite being based on something related to starfish or whatever. Just ignore Lurantis that isn't real

Suicune: "Suicune embodies the compassion of a pure spring of water. It runs across the land with gracefulness. This Pokémon has the power to purify dirty water." Along with all of its Pokédex entries really pushing the whole water purifying thing. It'd be weird for it to NOT be water. Northern wind is barely enough for ice type. If anything it'd maybe more imply flying, except no thats really dumb.

Whimsicott: Insert something about fairies being mischievous and stuff here. Just read Whimsicotts Pokédex entries. That thing really deserved its Prankster ability.

Lugia: This is a really dumb one on gamefreaks part, but I still consider it my win since there is an excuse. Gamefreak outright said it was merely because the Psychic type was considered very powerful, so they decided to give it to the legendary.

Flygon: It has dragonfly traits...and yet, it doesn't really look like a bug, now does it? Ignore the eyes and its kind of a...lizard thing. I'd say its much more defined by living in the desert.

Mega Garydos: While this feels more like a "why isn't mega gyarados water/dragon now?," I'll address it quickly anyway. Ignoring the Pokédex entries since they're like that for a lot of mega evos, the thing just...looks dark, y'know? Dark and evil. Gyarados was somewhat evil before anyway but less defined by it. And, once again if you're saying that they could've changed its type to Water/Dragon in a later generation, I repeat: I'm rather sure no pokemons type has been changed aside from for the sake of a new type (Magnemite Line becoming steel and then the big fairy wave of gen 6)

And I shall end this post with something @Captain Comet pointed out to me, explaining @Minty Electric 's thing about Gliscor: The thing lives in mountainous areas. Mountainous areas is enough of an excuse for Ground. Wahoo.

I dunno why you even mentioned psychic type for Lugia since that is not the one I'm questioning, is the flying type, I said it should be psychic/water like stated.

Trapinch is made after an antlion and vibrava is clearly made after a bug as well, flygon also have antennas, yes I see them as antennas and it over all looks like a bug to me. The whole line ain't bug yet is made after an antlion's life cycle. Going from living in a sandy pit to a winged adult.

Gyarados looking evil (it doesn't look evil to me tbh) and mean they should have changed its type to dark when Gen 2 hit, it doesn't look that different to me so the dark typing still do not make any sense as it simply just don't really strike me as one at all.

Lugia: .....it's a Pokémon with power over storms and such with really big wings. of. of course its flying?? I admit im blind but also what??

Trapinch: It is based on an antlion, but the Pokémon takes enough creative liberties towards being some dragon lizard thing that it feels like the ground type overpowers the bug type. Desert dragon thing with antlion inspiration.

if this thing doesn't look like a big, bad, evil monster to you, with a decently fitting color scheme to go with it, fair. the mega Pokédex entries also kinda point towards that, though a lot of those Pokédex entries are like that anyway so eh

Idk, it seems like a rather weak argument, considering the fact that all sorts of types live in the mountains (to name a few found in the same routes as gligar in various gens: teddiursa, skarmory, machop, weezing, zangoose, seviper, pawniard, rufflet, vullaby, amoonguss, sawk, throh, mienfoo, haunter, sliggoo, and weepinbell, and I'm only ending the list here because I'm lazy), and most of Gligar's pokédex entries mention its poisonous stinger. :P

Its wings looks better fitted for swimming and don't look like wings at all, they get points for being creative with Lugia's design but it doesn't change its wings do not look like wings. They look more like powerful fins perfect for swimming in those deep sea trenches Lugia usually lives in. That it have the ability to calm storms and to its dex entry saying it can presumably make a 40-day one with a single flap is not a good enough reason for the flying type for me and that's just my opinion.

I keep hold of Flygon line should have been a bug creative liberties or not simply because of what is made after and that shines through all the way to the end which is why I think it should have been bug.

Nope that does not look like an evil monster anymore than any other pokémon.

Lunala is one that hasn't made a whole lot of sense to me, considering it looks like a Ghost/Flying or Dark/Flying pretty easily. Also, Gyarados as a flying type still seems like a miscast, especially considering it can't even learn fly. These are acceptable, the real crime is Luxray only being Electric and not Electric/Dark.

    Lugia:
"It's wings look better fitted for swimming" "They look more like powerful fins perfect for swimming"
    ...
What. No. Big no. Giant no. No.

Flygon: I looked at Flygons dex entries and such a bit more, and realized something. A bloody lot of them seem themed around sandstorms. And while it does kind of fit bug, it is also nicknamed "The Desert Spirit."

Gyarados: First, I actually found another thing possibly explaining Gyarados not being dragon anyway, regardless of the type change rule thing.
"Its Flying-type may be a reference of koinobori, a carp-shaped wind sock traditionally flown to celebrate the Children's Day in Japan, formerly called Tango no Sekku (端午の節句). It could also be inspired by the Inkanyamba, a giant, winged, eel that causes storms when angry - a trait Gyarados is famous for."

But more importantly, I'm gonna take a big leap here and say Gyarados-Mega doesn't even look that much like a dragon. It's a big, powerful, angry sea serpent sort of thing. And it certainly looks enough like a dark type to fit the bill.

Lunala: A 3-way battle for the typing between dark, ghost, and flying, and ghost/dark won. Just because you have wings doesn't make you flying I guess.

Gyarados: Neither can a bunch of other flying types, friend. Including but not limited too: Mantine, Gliscor, Drifloon, Emolga, A lot of flying bugs, and jumpluff.

Luxray: Looking at Luxray's appearance, Pokédex entries, and all that, I can say: You are absolutely correct. It's not the biggest crime in the world, but yeah electric/dark fits it real well.

Lunala is Ghost/Psychic, not Ghost/Dark. So more of a four way battle.
