Gen 2 introduced a lot of things: Colored sprites, Shiny Pokémon, and of course, a whole new world we live in where you still gotta catch em all (And be the best that you can be)

It also introduced two brand new typings: Steel and Dark Types, bringing the original 15 to 17 until Fairies came out nearly 14 years later.

For those who remember playing Gold/Silver for the first time, or maybe just heard about the new typings, how did you react? I remember being particularly wowed by Steel-Types, specifically, Scizor. It was a sleek, shiny, red metal bug with giants pincers, and I thought it looked absolutely awesome. I was also impressed ingame by how high Steel Types defenses were, and it was cool seeing Magnemite and Magneton getting the Steel Type added to them as well.

I remember Dark-types being a huge thing, especially since we were coming out of the broken Gen1 that had been dominated by Psychic-types and NOW we finally had something to combat those natural disasters. Me, I preferred the Steel-types (even if it made Magneton, my favourite Electric-type, even weaker to Ground-types (EXPLAIN HOW THIS WORKS! 20 YEARS AND I STILL DON'T GET IT!)).

I remember way back in the day when I was real young, I won a booster pack of imported Japanese Pokémon cards in a raffle (I was big into Pokémon cards at the time). The foil card of the pack was Steelix, which had the new typing on it. My mind was completely and utterly blown. That type symbol in the corner? What is that? It's not a flame or a fist or a leaf or any of the seven real card types, so what is this?

Yeah, Steel was unbelievable to me. To this day it's probably my favorite type. Dark wasn't a big deal to me though. My brother obsessed over having Umbreon and Sneasel in his game, but my obsession was with Steel, which didn't leave me many options considering I don't like Scizor and didn't at the time like Forretress.

I remember going nuts over houndoom and sneasel when I first saw them and I thought steelix was the coolest thing ever, still love two out of three of those mons to this day.

Both of those types are still very impressive competitively! Dark being an offensive powerhouse and steel a defensive one.

I think the reason Jasmine is one of my favorite Gym Leaders is because she uses steel types that seem like such a contrast to her kind personality. Here she is trying to help an injured Ampharos and the next thing you know you have to fight her tremendous Steelix for the 6th Gym Badge!

My love for dark types stems all the way here, as they became a natural repellent to the once-overpowered Psychic types. Umbreon, Houndoom, and Sneasel often come to mind when I think of gen 2.

Steelix is also one of my favorite steel types.
